I'm buying a used Visor Deluxe from a friend for $75. He got it two summers ago and it has some varient of OS 3 on it. Is there any way to upgrade this? Thanks.
Dan
P.S. It is worth it? I don't need much but it would be nice to have any missing features I wouldn't have with an older OS.

As per Handspring customer support, "You cannot upgrade the version of Palm OS installed on your handheld. Unlike the world of desktop computers, major operating system releases for handheld devices rarely add hardware-independent features."
In other words, they'd rather have you buy a new PDA than be able to upgrade the OS - sorry!

The above refers to Handspring PDA's - you can upgrade the OS on Palm-branded PDA's. I'm not sure about Handeras or the Sony Clie (although Sony is selling a Palm OS 4.1 upgrade for the recently replaced N710C for $50).
Until I switched to Clie for screen and functional superiority, I preferred the Palm units to Handspring, in part because of the upgradeable OS. Handspring never did this.

its pretty much true that there is no reason to upgrade the OS on a handheld unit. the additional features that may come with an OS upgrade are (typically) easily obtained using 3rd party programs and hacks. pretty much any handheld (including the old palm pilot professional) can use pretty much any program out there. the OS hasnt changed all that much.
that said, MOST palm devices are upgradable (i believe the m100's arent), i think all sony devices are upgradeable, and i know for certain all handera devices are upgradeable. no handspring devices are upgradeable, which is why their devices tend to cost less, flash memory is expensive i guess.

Ok, so I found out the handspring has Palm OS v3.1
So what you guys are telling me is that there is no reason to upgrade the OS on this? Does anyone know exactly what I'll be missing, if anything? Thanks.

hmm. its hard to say for sure. handspring uses the palm OS license, but sorta "configures" it to fit the needs of its own devices. youd be missing something small like a different datebook view or something probably. youd have to look at a visor deluxe with 3.1 and compare it to a visor neo or one of the devices with 3.5.
i doubt youll ever feel handicapped by the OS on the deluxe. if anything, youll maybe want a peppier device with a 33mhz processor down the road.
[edit] im sure if you asked in the forums over at www.palminfocenter.com you could find some geek who could rattle off every minute difference...[/edit]
