Well, I posted this topic a couple of weeks ago and then it disappeared before I could read the responses.
Does anyone have thoughts on the issue of Palm-based devices vs. PocketPC-based devices? I saw an iPaq at the Metreon this weekend and it seemed pretty neat. I have to admit that I like the idea of a more functional PDA, but I didn't have enough time to play with the iPaq and I haven't really seen a nice comparison.

Only you know what you need, and what uses you will have for a PDA. I personally don't use one, as I find the calendar functionality in Entourage on my laptop to be easier to use, and nicer looking. (Plus, I'm young enough that I can still remember all of the things I need to do in a day, without checking a PDA every five minutes. ) When I did use a PDA for a few days, it was a Palm. It did all that it claimed to do well: the note pad was functional (although graffiti is not nearly as convenient as typing), the date book worked fine, etc. Best of all, it didn't need recharging, and would instantly be on when I pressed the power button. I honestly did not feel the need to play mp3s, or view miniscule pictures on it, so these "missing capabilities" as compared to PocketPCs didn't bother me at all. My point? Be honest about what you need vs. what you want, and also, keep in mind that support for PocketPCs on the Mac platform is virtually nonexistent.

I own both a Palm and a PocketPC. I think Palm is great if you want a PDA and the PocketPC is great if you want a Gameboy+. PocketPC users like to boast about how they can play mp3s, watch videos, play games, etc. on their machines, but from my experience, you tend not to do that after the novelty wears off. Any videos you have will be tiny and you're likely to finish watching them on the computer before they finish transfering to the PDA. It also crashes a lot too. Sure, you get tons of extra functionality over the Palm, but a lot of it is just novelty.
