Ok, maybe I'm really stretching here. . .but there has been mention of an Apple buyout of Palm (a rumor that has resurfaced for the upteen time). To me, however, it seems to me that this is about the first time that would border on making any sense.

So I went to the yahoo finance site to see if there is any news that may shed any light on this subject. There are a number of things that need to be disclosed -- Apple's good at keeping secrets, but not that good. The SEC keeps a watchful eye on these things.

I noticed an interesting-titled "video" that was released today (1/4) -- titled "Apple v. Microsoft PDA War." Now, where in the world would that come from, since Apple doesn't have a PDA??? Much less one to take on Microsoft.

Problem -- the video player doesn't work with IE, which I am using. So if someone using another browser could check this out, it may be interesting. Titled like that, I wouldn't think that it's a re-hash of the same rumors, especially not in the financial news area.

Here's a quick link to the PALM news page: http://biz.yahoo.com/n/p/palm.html It's an 8 minute video.

Just a thought.

No kidding -- so they're basing their business news on spymac's story? Very funny indeed.

Did the story have anything else interesting? It was apparently 8 minutes long. . . .

(I tried and tried to view it, even going back to OS 9 and running Netscape 4.79. It had all sorts of technical problems, so I finally gave up.)

That video is is just showing a bunch of pictures and videos from SpyMac. They are saying that it may not be real but it is fueling the fire for Apple.

Apple, Palm whoever, will lose against Microsoft because IMO it is not between Palm and Microsoft, the real battle is Nokia/Ericsson/Sony/Symbian vs Microsoft. Its about mobile data, not handwriting recognition.

If Apple does a next generation PDA, it will need to bear this in mind. A next Gen PDA needs to be able to converse in GSM/HSCSD/GPRS and be upgradeable to 3G. Then, my personal preference would be to add Bluetooth, and have an extremely small and light handset or head set, so I can keep the iPad safely in my bag when making a call.

The OS it runs is irrelevant in this scenario, it just needs to be compatible with whatever you're gonna put into it - USB mass storage for digital cameras, AppleWorks lite with those Word/Excel converters etc. And just port over the Newton's Dates, Notes etc. which still are quite excellent tools.

Run it all on an ARM chip and licence the OS to Palm. Oh happy days! It'll never happen.
