After three drops of my IIIC over a few months I find that it's really difficult to get Graffiti to respond to my stylus strokes. I write 'a' and get a 'v' - rarely do I get correct letters. Using my Gotype keyboard still works just fine, but, I can't use it at all times.

Are there any non Palm places that fix such things?

Or any suggestions on what I can try at home?

try www.gethightech.com They can sell you a digitizer and have instructions on how to replace it or they will replace it for you. Palm will also do it but it is expensive!
