I'm thinking of buying a 2100, and I was wondering if it was
possible to connect to an AirPort wireless network with it. I
know that the Apple AirPort card probably won't fit in the card
slots on the 2100, but are there any PC cards that communicate
with the AirPort standard that would work. Please help me --
this will let me decide whether or not to get a Newton!

Thanks,
Dieter Randolph

I think all of the 802.11 (airport compatible) PCMCIA cards out there are CardBus, which is an extension of the PCMCIA standard. The MessagePad 2100, I'm almost certian, does not have a CardBus compliant slot.

So the short answer is almost definately not. Wish my opinion was more cheerful.

The Orinoco (Wavelan) PC card does not specify CardBus, but it does require PCMCIA Type II. I'm not familiar enough with the standards and terms to know if these are the same or if this Newton model can take Type II cards.

It's not a question of hardware, but rather drivers. There are none. The 2000 and 2100 both have 2 Type 2 PC card slots.

Actually, if you check chuma or other Newt sites, there is a pre-alpha
quality driver for Wavelan running around.
