I have a Palm V, and I've lost the power cable that plugs into the cradle. It seems that there is no way to purchase another one without buying a complete cradle ($50!).

In the time since I lost the power cable, I've purchased a PowerBook. I'd like to connect the Palm to the PowerBook. Well, Palm says there is no specific cradle for this, I have to purchase the Palm Serial-USB converter ($40!).

Is there a way I can get connected to my PowerBook and get my Palm recharged without spending $90? I feel somewhat stupid paying $90 to do this when the product is so old, and some of the new Palms are only $129.

Vx cradles are only $25 on eBay. Or you could get just a charger (I've seen them for under $10), and sync via IR

Check out this travel cradle.iBiz Travel kit
You can Sync via your IR port or the travel cradle. You can recharge your power with a 9V battery. That is included with the travel package.
At least at the Asylum, they treat me with respect.

IR never would have occurred to me. Does that Beta Palm Desktop for OS X support that?

finally got my palm vx synched to my pismo in osx with beta 76 in IR mode. i followed another macnn poster who said to turn off (uncheck) all synch options in the palm desktop hotsynch panel, then reboot, then click the IR option at 115,000 then restart - and do not have classic running. i'm happy as a clam, after trying to get the keyspan adapter to work (no luck) and trying to get the IR to work in other configs, this was a pleasent surprise (at 2am!). one other thing, i think you need to have os 10.1.2 running (which was another adventure - update the security update, then the updater update, then the 10.1.2 combo update - someone else here also mentioned that the upgrades have to happen in this order or you wont be able to go through with it (1am!). anyway, i charge my palm with a targus hotsynch cable that won't work to synch but does charge. can't complain too much since and after all this, installing a scanner in my father in laws windows pc was still a nightmare.

I just picked up the Targus cable. Seems to be working for charging. Doesn't seem to do anything as far as syncing. The guy at Staples swore up and down that the cable wouldn't work with a Mac. I kept trying to tell him that USB didn't care, it was going to supply power no matter what.

Well, I let it go too long without getting it charged - all data is lost. I had it all in Outlook on my work PC anyway, so no big loss.

Is there such a thing as a USB extension cable? This thing is way too short.

Yes, wallinbl, you can get a USB extension. I have seen them at office supply stores and at Wal-Mart. Maybe even K-Mart.

the USB adapter is expensive.. if you need a craddle somehow i got stuck with one from my palm vX

I'd sell it to you for 10$ minimal plus shipping ... but you'd have to pay paypal because i'm extra lazy..

for the rest of you, I have 2 Palm III series craddles and a bunch of other junk for palms... I'll sell it extra cheap because i'm not to conerned with holding it forever..

I used to be a rep for sprint PCS at retailers like Best Buy, Office Depot, etc... whenever i needed something for my palm devices if they had open box extras laying around they gave them to me, so I got all these items for things i don't own anymore.
