i just purchased a palm Vx, and now i realize that i need to buy some
sort of connector kit to use it with my mac- i have a TiG4. i know there is preloaded palm software on the computer. so, do i need to get the whole connector kit or just a cable to connect it to my computer.

i am a novice in terms of this pda stuff, and am debating whether or not to keep or return my new puchase.

thanks for any advice!

I wish I waited till now to pickup a Palm Vx. Aren't they going for $199 or so? Nevertheless, you made an excellent choice.

What you need is the PalmConnect USB Kit. This will allow you to connect your palm to any computer that utilizes the USB port (like your Ti).

The Palm Desktop software is free and you can get palm software updates from palm.com. All you're paying for in the kit is the cable that will adapt your serial cradle to USB.

Hope this helps.

You need a USB-to-serial adaptor. I've used two with a Palm Vx - the PalmConnect USB Kit that was mentioned already is one, and the Keyspan PDA adaptor is the other. They both work fine.

In theory, and Mac-compatible USB-to-serial adaptor ought to work, but if you want the easiest solution, I'd go for one of those two.

thanks for the advice

last night i purchased the keyspan usb pda adapter, and set it up for use with my tiG4. took awhile for me to figure out how to turn the palm on. had to do the reset in the back of the palm.

But, i could not hotsync from the palm to the powerbook. i am not sure why, and will likely return the keyspan usb pda adapter very soon.

if you have any ideas as to why i can't do it, please let me know what you think i should do-- thank you very much.

method, and no cables were necessary- hooray, i can
put the palm to use, and not have to spend any extra-

oh yes, the palm Vx was on sale for $179 this week.

I just lost my IIIe and am looking to upgrade, most likely to the Vx. May I ask where you got it for $179?

Thanks!

well, i am not sure if you can get that deal now--
the sunday i made my purchase, i had checked the ads, and found some advertisements for the palm Vx, and office depot had it on sale for 179, and good guys was selling for 199, and good guys matched the price that i told them was in the office depot ad. the week after i did not find ads for the palm Vx--

so, the best i can advise is to keep checking the ads--

best wishes to you in your search!

That is the one thing that still miffs me about the iBook... I would have gladly payed the extra for an IR port on this baby... cause in order to Sync my m100 I need CABLES!!! I hate Cables! My mothers m100 sync's flawlessly with her IR port on her Ti... Grrrrr oh well...

PS... if there are any hardware developers out here... PLEASE make an IR port that plugs into a USB port or something that mounts flush against the side of an iBook... I'd buy 100 if you did! I know LOT's of buyers for a thing like that.

i was just curious if anybody had any thoughts on the Palm Vx as compared to one of the newer model Palms, such as the 505? is it worth getting the color? and what advantages are there in the newer Palms?

thanks--

IMHO, the Palm 505 is way overpriced, with a grossly inferior screen. The backlighting is almost imperceptible, the "color screen" is awful, with mediocre resolution.

I wanted to upgrade to this from my Palm vX, partly for the color, but more for the use of memory cards and expandibility - after trying this unacceptable failure, I tried, and bought, a Sony Clie N760C - this thing rocks! A phenomenal screen with twice the resolution of Palm (320x320 pixels), an incredibly bright backlighting (which you can turn down to save battery power if needed), great expandibility with Sony Memorysticks (which I already use in my Sony MiniDV camcorder and Sony DSCP-5 digital camera), and extra features (like a scroll wheel, back-button) and tons of extra software on the CD (although I have to use Virtual PC to sync to use some of it, which is Windoze-only).

All-in-all, this PDA is what I expected to see Palm bring to market by now. Unfortunately, they've been "left at the station" in terms of quality and features. Too bad - The Palm vX that I had was my 4th Palm-brand PDA.........
