Hi gang,

I was keeping an eye on the development of PocketMac so that I can synch up my iPaq. I noticed that the personal edition has come out of beta. Strangely, it seems that it can't synch contacts or scheduling information with Entourage, or anything else as far as I can tell. It appears that all they have acheived is the ability to transfer files to and from the PocketPC. Is this really the case (I hope I am wrong)? If it can't synch contacts and scheduling, then it is 99.5% useless to me. Is there a reason that anyone would want to use this software in its current form?

Cheers

You are correct that you cannot sync anything other than files with the current version of pocketmac. In order to sync entourage and outlook you will need the pro version which will set you back a few more dollars. The guys at pocketmac say that they are waiting on Micro$oft to release entourage API information so that they can release the pro version. Personally, I think the price is a little high for a version that essentially only lets you transfer files to a pocketpc.

The authors of pocketmac were very active on PocketPC Passion before the discussion board died earlier this week. Hopefully by this time next week they will be back answering questions about their product.

Hope that helps.

Ryu

Synching with PIM files is not an easy task. It's the one thing my Newton MP 2100 never did really well. I've been keeping an eye on their progress through the beta period. I was pretty amazed to find out that when the final product was released they didn't support synching with any PIM! Waiting for Microsoft ... what about all the other non-Microsoft PIMs? I could really use this program, but it remains in the vapourware file for me. I wonder how many of the people who pre-purchased the program did so knowing that they would get a program that would only allow file transfers.

Cheers

If its of any interest to you.... you can use DelCann Software's Newtourage to sync contacts with Entourage. Dates support is in the works. DelCann Software

Hi all,

We try to be active here, too... just so many places & letters
to read, we sometimes get a bit behind

While we are waiting for MS to produce a native Entourage X API,
we're also working on an interim release which will use AppleEvents.
This way, we can get something out to everyone ASAP. Then, when
the API is done, we'll simply offer it as an update.

BTW, to be fair -- MS' Mac division has been wonderful to work with.
(Just for the record, we don't want to be seen as pointing fingers.)

Why don't you make a product that synchs OSX Address with Palm and Entourage with Palm? I find the iPAQ pretty but too heavy and bulky for a PDA--I have a G4 Ti powerbook for color whiz-bang stuff. I use a Palm V because it fits in my coat pocket, is light, the charges lasts for weeks, and it is the Calendar/address book/simple note device I need. I am tired of devices that add way to many features--there is way too much bloatware in the embedded space in my opinion. Too many vendors brign PC "let's keep cramming in features" mentality to utility devices like PDAs and destroy battery life and ease of use. I am eyeing the 705 for wireless. Palm share has slipped but it is still the largest. My adivce to vendors: kepp it simple, small, light and focus focus focus on its use.
