I have a Handspring Visor that worked without any apparent glitches when syncing with Palm Desktop beta in OS X (10.1.3) that was released two or three months ago.
Now I installed the final release of Palm Desktop 4 last night and I can't get the Visor and iMac to establish a connection. The connection hardware is a Handspring USB cradle which, as I mentioned above, worked fine with the beta of Palm Desktop. Any thoughts on how to rectify this situation?

In the Hotsync setup try making sure USB connect is enabled and Palm USB Connect is disabled. It actually worked for me with both enabled on my Visor Prism, but you never know.
Also, check to make sure the Transport Monitor and the Palm Desktop applet thingy are in your login auto-start prefs.
If some are all of the above doesn't make sense, e-mail me at sanford_may@mac.com.

USB is enabled and I've tried it both with and without PalmConnect enabled. Also, both of the applet thingies are listed in the login items. Nothing's happening when I hit the sync button, though.

I know this probably won't be much help to you but I've got my Handspring Treo working fine with Palm Desktop 4 so maybe the problem is in the settings somewhere?

I finally figured it out and so I'll put the solution here in case anyone else finds themselves in this mess.
The Palm Desktop 4.0 installer deletes prior versions before it proceeds to install the new version. Or at least that what it makes you think is happening. What it doesn't do is update any files that are in use at the time. If you have the public beta installed, then you likely have the two OS X login items running (Palm Desktop Background and Transport Monitor). There might actually be a third file that's in use but I'm not sure. Transport Monitor probably doesn't matter as I believe it's only used for syncronizing with Palm Desktop in the Classic environment. However, without the updated version of Palm Desktop Background installing properly, the whole deal is a bust. What would be very helpful is if the installer would alert the user to any files that weren't loaded due to prior versions already being in use. This would have clearly indicated what was wrong from the very start.
To properly install version 4.0, I had to go to System Preferences (login) and remove the two startup files placed there by the public beta. Then, I logged out and then back in. This appeared to be the only way that the 4.0 installer would be able to get the new files loaded to take their place. I then ran the installer and did an uninstall of the public beta. I restarted and then ran the installer again to install version 4.0. I doubt that running the uninstaller and then restarting is necessary but at this point I was erring on the side of caution with everything.
Hope this may be of use to anyone stuck in a similar problem.

I too could not sync my Handspring Visor with desktop4.0.. until I read the advice above to disable Palm Connect from the Connection Settings. Now all is good.
(I did not follow the other advice and turn off the other palm startup items before installing 4.0 since I only read this forum after finding my initial problem)
Cheers

Hudson, are you using a serial to usb connection?
I'm going to try your solution but I'm wondering if I'm doomed because of this connection setup.

Hudson, you're my hero. I didn't do exactly what you did but you got me going in the right direction.
I basically just did a Sherlock search for anything Palm, HotSync, and Transport (gotta be careful with that one though). Deleted them all and moved any backup Palm DB's to a zip and did a full install. Worked right off the bat.
Slow as molasses but it works. Thanks.

Glad to here you had success. Though it seems you don't need me to answer your question, I'll put it here anyway for the record. I don't have a serial to USB cable, only the Handspring USB cradle.

I had similar problems which I fixed in almost the same way.
All is now fine, except every time I sync my Handspring Visor it prompts to be reset
btw. Is the view menu new, I seem to remember having problems with the lack of this in the beta?

I think the update problem is easily fixable. Go to Applications --> Palm --> Palm OS Updates and wipe out the entire contents of that folder. Visors don't have an updateable OS and so everytime you sync, Hot-Sync tries to update the OS but the Visor doesn't like that. Wiping out that folder's contents will prevent Hot-Sync from attempting and OS upgrade.

Thanks for that
I also had to empty the contents of a similar folder (Applications --> Palm -->Palm --> Palm OS Updates) In fact I deleted the whole folder.
I must have double installed when I had the installation problems.
DOH!

Okay, I can't seem to get Palm Desktop 4.0 to install on my iBook, though it worked on the G4 at work. I had the 4.0 beta installed on the iBook but not the G4, so I suspect that's the problem (or it's somehow related). I tried uninstalling the beta several times and did a search for installed components left behind, but every time I try to install the release version, it says installation failed and asks if I'd like to try again (which always proves futile).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a sort of similar problem as the one in the previous reply.
I had palm desktop beta installed in my iMac and I tried uninstalling it but did not succeed. So I installed palm desktop anyway to a different folder on my applications folder. The problem is that palm desktop still doesn't work, every time I try use palm desktop there is a error message with a number 6890 or something. After that desktop opens but I can't hotsync (palm desktop doesn't "see" my palm).
Btw: I have palm Vx and palmconnect-usb-adaptor and of course iMac 800.
Help is appreciated!
