After two years of trying to use a Palm instead of a Newton I have purchased a 2100 (2000 upgraded) off of eBay. I was hoping some of the current Newton owners could refresh my memory on a couple of topics.

1) Can I transfer my data from my Palm to the Newton or do I have to retype everything back into the Newton.

2) What Utilities / Applications are the must have ones?

3) Besides Apple's official 2.1 fixes, are there any OS patches out there which fix any of the lingering 2.1 bugs?

4) What is the recommended backup software to use? It must be able to run under Classic and work through an ethernet connection.

5) Any other advice is appreciated.

I am once again looking forward to using a Newton. Newton's are what got me over to the Apple side of the world, and considering Apple finally got it right with the 2x00 versions I was very sorry to see them go. I have tried for two years to use my Palm as a note taker and it just isn't what I want.

Thanks in advance.

To transfer data from the Palm to the Newton, use Palm Desktop as the go-between. Palm Desktop is actually just an update of Claris Organizer, which was compatible with the Newtons. To get the info to the Newt (along with apps, utils, and other stuff), use Newton Connection Utilities, which I think is available at www.chuma.org/newton/ncage (the Newton Cage by Victor Rehorst -- a must have site).

Paul Guyot has a system patch for OS 2.1 that I installed that works pretty well. Also, download Avi's Backdrop. It's a great backdrop application to replace Extras or Notes as the backdrop and it fixes the '61 error that crops up in the 2100 Newtons.

As far as other cool things, I use TapBar and DashBoard. For those and other great pieces of software, head on over to www.unna.org and browse to your heart's content.

Wow, thanks for the info. I'll be sure to add all of them. Glad to see moving the data shouldn't be a huge issue. I hate the idea of re-inputting all my data.

Thanks,
Doug

I've just recently purchased a MP2100 on eBay. Gave up on using the Palm (after having the first Palm and a few upgrades...was just too hard to write any more than a few words on). The MP2100 is excellent! My Desktop is a G4 with OS X 10.1.2 with Classic at 9.2.2.
Here's what I'm using:

I was initally connecting the MP to my G4 via a serial cable and the Palm USB-Serial adapter and running NCU via classic from OS X. Worked like a champ! Could install packages, U/L, D/L, and even use the G4 keyboard to write on the MP. Following info I got on the internet, I've installed the ethernet drivers and am using a 3com EtherLink III 3C589C card along with a cross-over able to connect to my desktop. The speed difference is the same as going from a dial-up connection to DSL. If you got a choice, install the ethernet drivers.

As for software, here's what I've installed:
- The Newton Undergraound backdrop
- Battery Counter (gives total on-time of battery and backlighting)
- Ålarm Clock (freeware)
- MoreInfo
- Newton Rebooter
- Namigator 3 (quick name lookup by writing first few letters)
- Backlight Plus (to control when backlighting comes on automatically)
- AutoContrast
- Freeze Utilities
- TimeLock
- SBM Tasklist
- ToDo Cleaner
- Prefs Cleaner
Also, on the G4 I've installed Newtourage...a program that sync's my Names from Entourage v.X to the MP2100 built-in names program. The developer is now working on the sync for the Dates. Truly awesome!

- Good Luck !!

Could you give a link to that site that guided you through the install for the ethernet drivers? I just bought a 2100 off of ebay too. Will any PCMCIA ethernet card work or does it have to be a specific kind? I'm looking forward to getting the newt. I had a 130 for a while but it was too slow for the HWR. I hear the 2100 is a ton better.

I also want to say thanks for the links.
Just got a 2100; paid too much, but got what I wanted.
Got an initial sync with an old 7500, taking it to work to try on my old cyborg 8500.
I've had an MP120 for a couple of years but it is so slow, it's basically useless.
Now, this 2100 on the other hand...

Sorry about the delay in responding...

The Ethernet setup instructions can be found at:
http://www.chuma.org/newton/ethernet/instructions.html

I just followed the simple instructions and everything worked fine. You can download the necessary packages by following the links listed at :
