Now that I have moved to a 2100 and am able to run NIE, I was wondering what the best internet programs are. Specifically:

What is the best browser

What is the best newsgroup reader

What is the best e-mail program

Finally, is there a set of network utilities (ie ping, traceroute etc) for NIE 2.x?

Thanks in advance

"Now that I have moved to a 2100 and am able to run NIE, I was wondering what the best internet programs are."

...congrats!

"What is the best browser"

...So far Newtscape, does cookies, frames, tables, and JAVA/WABA. Or NetHopper 3.2, freeware, does basic web pages and does HTTP 1.0 protocol.

"What is the best newsgroup reader"

...Paperboy and Inkreader(spelling?).

"What is the best e-mail program"

...Simplemail is the most up-to-date, freeware version 4.3 released last month allows IMAP access. If you like using a seperate floating window for POP list management get Enroute. If you like Eudora, get Eudoralite for Newton.

"Finally, is there a set of network utilities (ie ping, traceroute etc) for NIE 2.x?"

...A few, not much since Apple stopped production. Check www.unna.org , www.amug.org , www.newtonville.com , and www.newted.dyn.org (?).

"Thanks in advance"

...Always welcome.

Thanks. I have tried both Newtscape and NetHopper. NetHopper being free is quite nice, NewtScape keeps crashing on me. I've never been able to load a page under NewtScape.

InkSpot is the one I have choosen. It is still being updated!

Thanks for the links. I'll check them out.

It feels good to be using a Newton again. I never got used to the Palm even after two years.

Yeah, Newtscape uses alot of heap. Try freezing what you don't use and try again. There's also the 'Web server' software for the Newt.(NPDS). Find it at www.unna.org .
