"Joseph Felder offered a possible workaround for a synchronization bug:

"I was having the same problems reported by others after upgrading to MacOS 9.0.4 (namely that it would time out). I use an iBook, with MacOS 9.0.4, HotSync 2.6.1 and a Keyspan PDA USB adapter. I tried turning on the 'Enable hot sync software at system startup' checkbox on the Hotsync->Setup screen under MacOS. (I've always had that option turned 'off' on the iBook.) I rebooted, and syncing suddenly worked again. Possible explanation: I remember syncing working more reliably on my desktop machine a long time ago (back when I used MacOS 8.6) whenever I had the 'Enable at startup' option turned on. The difference in behavior under 8.6 implies that the software works 'differently' when you check or uncheck this box. Under 9.0.4 it works so differently that it can break or fix syncing in its entirety."
