Ok. I have a MP130 and was wondering what exactly I need to connect it to my machine. I have the software on 3.5, but since I no longer have a 3.5 drive I think that the chances of syncing are slim. Also, what cords do I need?

Thanks

I bought an entrega USB to Mac Serial converter. It's now sold by Xircom under the name "Portgear". It works fine with an eMate 300 once you download the driver from the xircom website. It doesn't work with Appletalk, though.

The Keyspan USB to Serial adapter works very well, also. Copy the software from--or make disk images of--the installer on your old computer over a network (or send it as an attachment via E-mail), plug the Newton into the USB adapter, and you're set!

The next question is, how well will this setup work under Mac OS X? If it's not going to work, let's hope Apple comes up with a decent (i.e. not a Palm clone) replacement for the Newton before OS X is shipped to consumers.

I happen do just this. I have an AGP G4 & a good old fashinoed Newton 130. I am able to link to it & successfully syn & back-up, etc. A couple of factors play in, one obviously was having the Newton software on the G4. Thruth be told, if memory serves correctly, there were a couple of versions of Newton Connection Utilities, one (the newer more feature laden one) had a wierd, strange update process you had to go through, I am using v1.0 of NCU which was the only one I know of, & originally it was a beta only, then there was an updater that made it into the final v1.0 app. Anyway, I believe I when I got my G4 I just found it out on the Internet again & re-installed, I believe I even found it at Apple's site (don't hold me to that though).

The other factor is some type of hardware converter. I use a USB to serial adapter, I am using the iDock by Newmotion Technology, however, it is sold under a couple of brands I believe, the converter itself actually looks like a mini G4, it's kind of cool, & the software is VERY stable (the olny item I've never been able to get to work with ANY USB to seial was an old Connectix QuickCam, they just don't work). Anyway, it has two ports unlike the old Entrega models, (one of which I have at work), so with one adapter (for about the same cost), you can have both a calssic Mac modem & printer port & the Newton with the NCU (Newton Connection Utilities) works quite nicely each time, with it, I would wager to say any USB to serial adapter should work, but would not etch that in stone, as we all know drivers can be VERY different. Also I set the Newton to connect via Serial not AppleTalk, which works around the limitation of the USB to serial converters not tunneling AppleTalk. Hope that helps.

The gport adapter by GeeThree is also a nice serial solution, but you'll sacrifice your modem port if you install it.

What about Carbon compability in MacOS X ? Isn't it gonna be even more annoying to synchronize in MacOS Classic than now, with no updated pim programs except PalmTop? I think Apple ought to update the Newton Connection utilities or at least release the source code for the opensource community.

Other Newton users using Beta OS X have used NCU with no problems. Just start up Classic and then NCU then which ever software driver to connect.
