I am curious if I could route my DSL connection to my Newton 130 using IPNetRouter and a localtalk cord. I have NIE 1.1 and have searched the setup for DHCP options but couldn't find anything. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the NIE 1.1, only the version that shipped with the MP2K, but I think they are fundamentally the same. I was able to get my MP2K on the internet via localtalk and Vicom Gateway (the same principal as IPNetRouter) by using the Mac IP Gateway server functionality on Vicom, and having the Newton grab its IP from Vicom via Mac IP Server. I'd suggest manually hard coding the DNS info if possible.

This really IS pushing the envelope forward!

I am very pleased to see that other people are still making good use of their Newts after all this time too.

I wouldn't be without my 120v2

Good Luck!

I have my MP2k running both via ethernet (with the old farallon 10bt card) and via macip.

I am using IPNetRouter to create localtalk/macip and ethernet and ppp routes.

I however, do not use dhcp, and have the machines setup to use hardcoded ip addresses for all info, including dns servers, etc.

Not gonna happen.

The newer Newton PDAs (MP2000, 2100) use NIE 2, whereas the MP 130 can only use NIE 1.1. NIE 1.1 only allows TCP/IP connections via a modem dial-up. People who have reported broadband TCP/IP connections (ethernet, etc) are using NIE 2.x running on their MP 2Ks.

Anything faster than a 56k modem connection is overkill anyway. It would take the 130 a half hour to process a 60k page. And graphics, forget about it.

On a similar note, I'm trying to set my MP2K up as a web server using nHTTPD and Apple's unsupported LocalTalk Bridge software. The Newton is hooked up via its LocalTalk cable to a Quadra 950, which is in turn hooked up to a network which talks to the outside world via an ADSL line. Still haven't gotten it to work, though.

Even if I try to hardcode in the IP information the 130 will still want to dail up. The only two connection type options I have is PPP and SLIP, no MacIP or anything like that. Thanks for the replies!
