I've got a Palm IIIxe. I LOVE it. I wish it were a little faster. Lo and behold, I found a Hackmaster hack at megasoft2000.com called "FastCPU" version 1.2. It lets you overclock (?) your palm, and DAMN is it fast!

Using Bechmark 2.0 (www.quartus.net) my system went from 100% to 248% !! Using Mapopolis (www.mapopolis.com) my screen redraw is litterally HALF what it used to be!

But, what's the catch? Does it create potential problems, instablities? Anyone have experience with this? Does it really suck down the batteries?

Check it out and let me know!!

I'm going to be testing the battery theory as time goes by. As for Apps running fast when you don't want them too, the cool thing about this hack is that you can adjust how fast EACH app runs. If it DOES indeed really drain batteries, than perhaps I'll just enable it for Mapopolis.

How does this (and other hacks like this) work on faster palms? Like the Visor platinum which are already really fast?

I tried it on my Palm IIIc, and yes the speed increase is noticeable, but I have to do a soft reset every single time I want to hotsync after using that hack to speed things up.

I sent this question to the developer(s) and here is their reply:

Yes, FastCPU forces the device to take more energy, but it is no more than 5
% - 7 %.

Reliability of all programs depends only on authors of these programs!!!:-)

If the author has written the program under all laws is should work
perfectly.

I have not had any problems with the HotSync on my IIIxe. The demo screen from their website shows it in color. Perhaps the hack is conflicting with another that you have installed.
