You'll need:
- On the Mac
* Apple Remote Access Personal Server 3.0, or MacOS 9
* an FTP server on your Mac (I used NetPresenz - http://www.netpresenz.com)
- On the WinCE device
* an FTP client (I used ScottyFTP - http://www.ruksun.com/ ).

Instructions:
1) On the WinCE device create a new connection
-> Start Menu > Programs > Communications > Connections
-> Double-tap New Connection

2) Name it something you like. Select 'Dial-Up Connection' and tap 'Next'. Select 'Hayes Compatible on COM1' as modem. Then click Configure and set the baud rate to 115200 (or the maximum of your Mac's port) and check 'Manual Dial'. Click 'OK'.

3) (If you're Mac is configured for LAN/cable modem internet access, you mayu not need this step.) On the Mac open the TCP/IP control panel and create a new Configuration (File > Configurations. Click duplicate) Select 'Ethernet' in the 'Connect' popupmenu and 'Manually' in the 'Configure' popupmenu.

4) In the TCP/IP control panel click the 'Options' button at the bottom of the window (if you don't see this button, choose 'User Mode' from the Edit menu and click 'Advanced'). Disable 'Load only when needed'.

5) On the Mac open the Remote Access control panel (make sure ARA PS is installed first) and choose 'Answering' from the 'Remote Access' menu. Enable Answering and PPP answering. Enter an IP in the field and close the window. Open the Modem control panel and select 'Null Modem 115200' as your modem. Select the serial port to which you WinCE device is connected to.
It's possible that your WinCE device now tries to connect to your Mac. Abort that. (You can also disable this in the 'Communications' Settings panel on the WinCE device).

6) Open the Users and Groups control panel (or open the Sharing Setup control panel and click the Users and Groups tab if you don't have a Users and Groups control panel) and create a new user for the WinCE device. Enable 'Answering' for that user.

7) On the WinCE device open the newly created dialup connection by choosing it from 'Start Menu > Programs > Communications'. Enter the name and password you gave to the device in the Users and Groups control panel/tab. Leave 'Domain' empty and tap 'Connect'. If a terminal window pops up dismiss it with the OK button. After a few seconds the connection should be established. If not try setting the Baud settings to a lower value (56k should work on all Macs).

8) Set up the FTP server on the Mac to share a folder with the files you want to transfer to the WinCE device (see manual that came with the server).

9) Open the FTP client on the WinCE device and let it connect to the your Mac's IP address (you can look this up in the TCP/IP control panel).

10) That's it. You should now see your Mac's files in the FTP client. Now just download them and that's it.

Some valuable tips: If you want to upload software which comes with an installer, upload the .CAB file corresponding with your WinCE device (MIPS, SH3, SH4 or ARM). Do not upload the installer as they're for x86 PC computers.

If this works I'm going to try to combine the functionality of the ARA PS and the FTP server in one application, possibly with automatic decoding of WinCE software installers. So please let me know if this works for you and wether additional steps were necessary.

Another idea is to hook up a CF card reader to your mac and just copy the files to the card. Then insert the card into your device and run from the card.

I have never tried this, but it sounds like it might work.

My goal is to create a solution that does not require people to buy expensive hardware like a compactflash card reader.

The flash card reader I was talking about only costs $30.

I'm not saying your idea is bad, just suggesting another one.

Evinyatar: I don't have a Pocket PC to try this out (I own a Palm). But I am deeply impressed by your experimental work and efforts to create better compatibility between Pocket PC and the Mac OS. Kudos! And keep going.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Does this work with USB? I don't have a PocketPC but would like to get one. Does this allow me to install files I download of the internet, and files that came on the CD with the device, which I assume is windows formatted? This is great.

As someone said above, keep working on this. It is great!.

I started to try this but I was stumped at the ARA door.
Is ARA Server Available online as a download? I could
only find updates to it on the Apple Website & Versiontracker.
Any help?

I really want to try this out.

ARA is only freely available for users of MacOS 9.0.4. If you're on an earlier version of the MacOS it is (or was, I dunno) available commercially.

Using OS 8.6 so I guess I'm up the creek.
Oh well (not worth upgrading to OS9 IMHO)

Has anyone here tried a VNC connection using this method? I've downloaded a VNC server and PocketPC VNC client, but haven't been able to establish a connection... FTP's working fine though.
