I have just purchased a Palm m100 and I want to connect it to my iMac DVSE. Am I able to use any old PC Connecter-to-USB cable, or do I have to buy the rather expensive Palm branded one?

Give it a try. Nothing to lose. But remember, don't give up on the first try because it takes a few times even with palm's adapter.

Can anyone comfirm that it works? I don't want to spend X number of $$$ on something if I don't konw that it works. Do you need special software for it to work with USB?

Well when the M100 shows up just give it a try. The regular Palm desktop should have what you need to connect over USB. There's an option for "Palm Connect USB" just try that with the converter you have. The one Palm sells goes for ~$40.

I've got an extra adaptor.
When i got my palm, it came with one, but i didn't realize that, so i bought one too. I never opened it, but i'll test it and sell it to ya if it works.

Email me at sjaffa@mac.com if interested.

Try eBay too... I've sold extra cables and cradles that I didn't need there, so it's worth a shot...

You probably already tried this:

I used to have a kensington adaptor (actually two different models), and now I have the Palm USB kit. All three worked and all three suffered from some USB driver annoyances with Palm's software.
The USB kit requires me too unplug and plug the cable after my computer is started up. This will ensure that the USB drivers get loaded since it seems that the startup process misses it.

So I suggest that you unplug-plug once the computer is started up.
