this ATA driver (i think i read this somewhere) will allow IBM microdrives, cheaper flash memory and a couple of other things to work with newtons, right?
where could i get more info on the development of this driver and what devices (cards) should work with it.
also what newton(s) will the driver work on?

Go to Planet Newton and subscribe to the Newton Talk List. A guy named Paul Guyot is a frequent poster and is working on the ATA driver for the Newton. He's the guy to talk to.

For IBM Microdrives, it depends if the Newton is able to power them.

where could i get more info on the development of this driver
http://www.kallisys.com/newton/ata/

and what devices (cards) should work with it.

ATA compatible cards. It currently works with a 16 MB CF card with an adapter.

also what newton(s) will the driver work on?

2.x devices. It works on a MP120 and a MP2100 US.
However, I'll need some internal info to make it run on German MP120 and German MP130. I posted how to get this info on newtontalk and someone gave me the info for a MP130 US. I got the info for the EM300 and the MP2100 D from another source.

Wow! I must say its nice having _the_ Newton expert on board. I just checked out the driver page with the screenshots and all I have to say is that I will be signing up for the beta/final copy whenever it comes out.

Thanks to Paul and developers like him that help make the Newton the best platform around! I am amazed!

If you hadn't posted a link to my website, I probably hadn't found it. Let me think to add it to the FAQ.

Yes and no. In fact, some critical features are missing for a beta version. I don't use the card for my own storage. The thing is that without my MP2000u, I lose a lot of time for development.
However, I hope to release the beta before Christmas.

I saw the screenshots, but is that of a fully funtioning driver?

On these screenshots, the driver part (i.e. the piece of code to read/write/send commands to the card) works properly. Since then, I only worked on the interface with the OS which is the hardest part.
I mount store which are physically on the card. But, there is something wrong there, the system considers that these stores are not valid so that moving big objects (typically packages) doesn't work while moving small one (typically notes) does. To fix that, I need to register the stores.

I first thought of a system patch, but since the accident, I decided that I won't design any system update until I had made a custom ROM Board. Then I thought of a dynamic patch, but I have a little problem there: I can allocate a physical page, I probably can map it to the jump table page I want to patch BUT I haven't found a way yet to copy the jump table page on this page, and besides, mapping the page probably makes it read only. In a nutshell, I'm not sure at all this is doable and I've already spent too much time on that. Hence, I decided to do a hack to register the stores, the drawback is that there will be at most 4 mounted stores at a time per card.

Paul
