I'm about to buy a used Palm V in mint condition with the metal case all accessories and the Palm Keyboard for $285.00 I think it's a pretty good deal considering - unless there is something I should know, like: Keyboards don't work through Macs, or Palm V w/ serial numbers ending in "x" always fail after exactly 365 days, or a new Vs edition is sceduled to be released next month...
You get the picture. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

well, with the keyboard for 285 is a pretty grand deal. heres a couple points to think about..
1. i dont think "stock" palm Vs are mac compatible out of the box. most of the time you have to buy the "MacPac" to get it to work.
2. palm is rumored to be offering up some new handhelds soon, a palm V with a color screen and memory expansion being among those rumored offerings. other fancy new things may be in that potential offering as well (theres been no official announcement from palm), if youre going to want to latest and greatest, i would wait a few months.
3. the palm V only has 2 megs of memory. depending on what youre going to use it for, that may or may not be enough. my palm iii which ive had for like 3 years now only has 2 megs of memory, and ive never really ran into the problem of not having enough. i just play some games, keep my phone numbers/appointments/memos, and a few avantgo channels. if you wanted to do some word processing, or spreadsheet work with that keyboard of yours, you would probably want more memory.
4. as far as problems with palm Vs, i dont think there are any rampant problems ive heard of. i would check to see if the OS is up to date (version 3.5)
so thats about all i can think of. what kind of keyboard are they throwing in?>

You don't need the "MacPack" so much at the USB to serial converter. The latest Palm Desktop has the needed software. Palm only says that their converter will work but others have used the ...ummm....who makes the other one....? Sorry I can't remember.
Seems like a good deal.
My "boss" go one for free.

That's funny, because I made up the "Vs" part. Is that what they'll call it? I should get into marketing! I have the III also, so aside from the aesthetic form factor I guess the only difference is the brighter screen, right? Since I probably wont use the Palm keyboard it's quite a penny for the jump. If I get $150 for the III (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1210277703) that's $135 for an aluminum enclosure. Pretty steep.
I've got the Mac Pack/usb converter that's worked rather well for me through 9.1 and I hope the V would be equally faithful. Unfortunately, it only has 3.3 on it, or maybe only 3.1 - not 3.5. I think I still want to do it though.

Ok, folks - get ready for the iNewton soon! That's because I've decided to upgrade to the V. You'll see. Just my luck
One question comes to mind though. With a second palm in the family, how best should I sync the Palm V? Can I just swap cradles and have the Palm Desktop "override" the V? Should I perform a Hard Reset first?
Thanks in advance,
-Paul-

Belkin makes the USB PDA adapter that works with Palm VII, V, III, and M100 series.
I've got a Palm Vx (brand new and shrink wrapped w/ no reserve) on eBay if interested.
