I'm a Newton rookie so please be gentle. I'm away on vacation for the first time without a laptop. Just my MP2000. I finally got the Megahertz 28.8 modem to connect to my ISP. Had to play with the pauses between sending scripts and password, etc. I'm using Net Hopper 3.0 for web browsing and Eudora Pro 1.1 for mail. Unfortunately I'm stuck. When I tap "Send Mail" in Eudora the connection slip opens and the scroll bar spins. The dialogue at the bottom of the slip says "searching for host..." and the Flashcom outgoing mail server (smtp.flashcom.net) but never makes contact. Similarly in Net Hopper when I enter a url I get the connection slip and spinning scroll bar. The dialogue says "looking for address..." but never finds it. What am I doing wrong? I know the internet connection is established. When I quit either app I'm first instructed to close the internet connection, which I do via the blinking star at the top of the screen. I was afraid it was the crappy Florida phone lines, but my laptop never had a problem with the same ISP and access numbers.

Make sure your DNS server adress is correct... Thats the only thing I can see that would do that.

Make sure the SMTP is setup correctly. Also, delete the 'internet DNS cache' in the 'storage folder' in extras, just before you hit the web. It tends to get corrupted easy.

Best way is to make a duplicate of your main internet setup, then change the phone number and area code depending on where you are.

IT WORKS! IT WORKS!! Thank you all. I had forgotten to include the DNS server address. Once I entered that, viola! No more laptop for email while traveling. It's my Newton MP2000 and me against the world.

On a side note, the stares and questions about the Newton have surprised me. Many folks think it's some new, as yet unseen PDA. They're shocked when I tell them it's really an older, diccontinued model. "Then why are you still using it," they ask? "Because it is still the best thing out there, by far," I reply. Then I show them some of the programs and let them gawk at the beautiful screen (which is bigger than their entire Plam Pilot). "Your Palm has what processor? 20MHz? That's too bad. My Newton has a 160MHz processor." They'll never look at their Palm IIIx the same way again.

Rambo, my sentiments exactly. I also get the same reaction out of people and another one: Where can you buy one of those? When I tell them they don't sell them new anymore, they are shocked.

BTW, what ISP do you use that lets you dial-up on vacation? Is it a local one with an 800 number or you you just eat the long distance charges? Or is it a free ISP that works with the Newt still ?

I'm using a long distance dial up ISP, Eclipse Internet. I have an account from work so I pony up the money for a long distance call. I've been searching, though casually, for an ISP that will charge me by the minute without a monthly fee. No luck so far. My Covad/Flashcom mail works like a charm, and the Newton kills the connection as soon as it has my mail so the damage to my wallet is minimum.

People are pretty amazed when I pop out a flashcard to show them storage. Then I tell 'em about the possibility of a wireless modem. Eyes bulge. I love it!
