Well, it's not, but...

If apple Open Sourced the Newton OS to anyone and everyone that wanted it, and If someone started supporting it (hardware wise...) would you throw away your palm for it?

I have yet to see a really cool application for Palm (I have a visor), and it's just not as cool as my old Newton was...

Yes, there would be lots of us who would -- and have!! I am currently a Newton user and love it. The problem is that the chances of that happening are slim. On the other hand, the Newton community is alive and kicking! Paul Guyot is in the process of finalizing his ATA driver for the Newton, making cheap storage available. Many developers are still writing new apps for the Newton. And Dr. Newton is still doing his Newton repairs. I'd say give the Newton a try anyways.

If you are interested, you can check eBay for a Newton (there's a whole section for them) but I would recommend joining the NewtonTalk mailing list at www.planetnewton.com and asking around. Also, there is a Newton Classifieds site -- search for that one. I just bought my first Newton a few months ago and have been more than happy with it.

well the unfortunate fact of the NOS open-sourcing is that it will never happen. first of all, the technology used in Newton was very advanced, and elements such as the Rosetta handwriting recognition are still very valuable to Apple. (re: rosetta port for OS X). plus Apple couldnt open source Newton if they wanted to, all the source and dev data is pretty mixed up and abandoned, as the department collapsed quite quickly. so this also prevents a re-production of newtonOS, they'd most likely have to remake the OS.
plus steve isnt one to give away core technologies ^_^
