I recently came into possession of a Newton EVT 2. It looks just like a 2100 in every aspect as far as i can tell. No one i have asked knows where it fits into the Newton timeline.

I loaded some games designed for the 2000 and they work fine. It is able to beam applications and messages to an emate 300.Any info such as upgradeability (word?), speed, etc. would be great.

Thanks in advance.

specs: (on back of unit)
Rev K
MLB rev. 03
DRAM:1M
ROM Card:8M
hermes: G
koynes: C
Flash: 4M

(info from software)
Rom version 316AS.00-0

Sweet d00d, nice pics...
Thats one cool piece, i heard the DVT model had 8 or 16MB flash

Be proud to have a piece of cool Newton history

BTW, i Totally love that EVT 2 on the front of the machine... Awesomeness!

Wow! That's bada**! I would love to own something like that. Was that a prototype for the 2100. I noticed you said the DRAM was only 1 MB and the case looks to bear more of the 2000 type styling. Maybe it was made just before they started to spin off the Newton Group. What does EVT 2 stand for anyways? Just curious (and more than a little envious )

Oh, and to answer your question about upgradability, I would say that there shouldn't be a problem with adding the 2100 memory upgrade. As for speed, the PixSolutions implant *might* work, but I don't know if I would risk it. Plus it gets disabled when you use the interconnect port or an ethernet card.

I got the info from a message posted on Usenet by Don Vollum, but I hadn't found the time to add it to the last revision of the FAQ. It probably will be added to next millenium FAQ (which will be posted on comp.answers and news.answers). Here is the message:

"DVT" was one of the levels of prototype in the Newton program. My
understanding (I never worked directly at Apple, but I was pretty closely
involved as a third-party developer with the 2.1 OS) is that the initial
prototypes were called "EVT" ("Engineering Verification Test").

After the EVT units were tested for a while, and various changes were
made, the DVT ("Development Verification Test") units were created. DVT
units were supposed to be closer to the final production devices.

I have one each EVT and DVT MP2K devices (along with EVT and DVT eMates).
Sadly, the only device still functioning is the EVT eMate-- the others
have died for various reasons.

My understanding of the history of the MP2K (known as "Q" internally at
Apple, and "N2" to third-party developers) is as follows:

1) Initial EVT prototypes were similar to the final MP2K, except instead
of the StrongARM processor, they had the ARM710 processor (same as the
eMate). I didn't get involved until the StrongARM devices were built, so I
don't know if any ARM710 devices ever got to DVT.

2) A second batch of EVT devices with StrongARM processors were built. I
believe these were actually "EVT 2" devices.

3) A batch of DVT devices was built. Most of the units I've seen were
configured as the original MP2000. There were a few 4mb DRAM devices built
in the DVT run, and I suppose it's possible that a couple of units with
more ROM or flash were built, but I've never seen one.

I hope this info is useful.

Whoa, The EVT must be very rare than...
Good thing you have an EVT 2, the normal ARM EVT would have been pretty slow

BTW mrcoffee, do you have a picture of the back of the machine? Are thoes specs you listed on the tag on the back of the unit?

Wow, no response there for a while and then BAM. Here is the picture of the back that someone wanted. Yes i did read all the info off of there.

image 4

If you look at the picture you can see where i tried to remove the FCC warning to see if there was any info under it. Tried and tried but to no avail.

It would make sense for it to be a developer model since i found it in drawer while cleaning out some old hardware at Apple ( I work there part time but only part time because of school). The nice people there told me “Merry Christmas” and now it is mine. It was next to some other developer stuff all from a while ago. The next drawer had about 30 or 40 newton modems. hehehe

The only thing now that i am wondering about is the square on picture 2 next to the serial port. It looks removable but a lack of faith in my abilities has made it not happen. Is it for some other kind of connection? I would love to have a real serial port and not have to use my eMate 300 for a go between (too lazy to buy a cable).

Thanks for the great response. Never thought too much about these forums for their usefulness but my faith has been restored.

Very cool...
I love the way it says Q serial number.

Anyhow that square cover is for the expansion port... the MP2000 series have an internal connector for a modem/serial card but unfortunately noone has made anything for it. BTW you have to open the case to be able to take the cover out, but theres nothing else there so theres no point
