and use the phone as a modem? I'm in the market for a new cel phone, and would that option.

and before someone says it, the visorphone isn't available in my area, and they have no ETA for it either.

Check into the Xircom springboard modem. It is both a land-line and cell-phone modem. Check out the information from Xircom, as I don't know if it works with all kinds of cellphones, but you basicaly hook a cable from the modem to the cellphone and away you go. Here's a link I got from the Handspring's website.

that seems awfully steep for a plugin module.... $150 for modem just to connect phone to visor? ??

AFAIK, there is also a module that IS a phone/modem. ?

Are there any other solutions for digital cell phones (already own) and visor?

___________
incoherance is key...

here's what I've figured out so far for those who're interested:

The Visorphone could be exactly what I want, but is unavailable in my area, even though they tout access in Georgia on it's webpage. I guess they mean Atlanta, which, as most people know, doesn't not constitute the entire state of Georgia (Atlantans just think it does).

The Xircom springboard modem is sweet, but requires the modem ($150), and then a connectivity kit ($130), and an compatable phone ($100-200). It can connect to certain Ericcson, Nokia and Siemens cel phones.

Xircom is supposed to be coming out with the SpringPort Wireless Data
springboard, which can only connect through a cel phone connection. This is what i'm looking for, but Xircom has yet to deliver.

I got a Visor Deluxe which I connected to a Nokia 6210 (IR). I use iRLink from IS-systems to redirect the cradle to the iR-port. I read mail with either OneTouch or Eudora for Palm. This works beautifully. But you got to beware of some things!
1. Double check that your Nokia has an activated iR-port. Some models of Ericsson and Nokia don't have iR in the US (beats me, but that's the way it is)
2. Make sure that your phone network handles data-transmission.
3. Rock'n'roll
4. If you're lucky you can get 43.3kbps (depending on the provider)

Good luck, and remember wireless means no cords anywhere....

Camera, you might be interested in my setup. I have an m100 working with my nokia 8290. I don't need any extra hardware because they both use infrared. The phone works well as a modem. I browse the web on the train and use instant messenger. It's great. You will need a cell phone that supports infrared. I got my phone free with fairly cheap service from Voicestream. Here are the drawbacks to this method; 1-since its infrared, the palm and the phone must be aligned at all times. I've fixed this with a rubber band and making sure the palm is flat against my leg when traveling. If you sit them both on a table you will have no problem. 2-My phone is limited to 9600 baud-VERY SLOW- if you know of a faster phone you may want to get that one instead. 3- I end up using quite a lot of minutes online. Good luck.
