Hello there, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with getting the iPaq handheld or any other pocketpc device to sync with vritual pc 4.0 (win 98). I cant find any way of doing it.. I would love to hear a work around or anything on the subject, thanks for your time!

I have been trying to do the same thing w/ Win 2k, but ActiveSync won't see the USB cradle. VPC sees it as an unknown USB device though.

Any help on this would make my life eaiser too as I hate having to use a PC to sync my iPaq (a great PDA-so much better than a Palm).

I wonder if Compaq would provide support for this?

Hey there, yeah, iPaq definitely blows the palm away, I talked to someone from connectix and he said that an update to VPC with added support for Win CE devices is "in development" whatever that means.. That is added hope though.. I bought a compact flash reader to get stuff onto mine since it came with the CF jacket, I can just load the programs I want onto the card and unload them onto the handheld, plus I can back it up and save all the data. The sad thing is I still can't figure how to make email work or web sites, that is going way over my windows expertise. But that seems to be the easiest way that I can find, hope you have some luck with yours, one guy I talked to said that he had heard that it might be able to see it if you use a serial port instead, so he bought a serial card, but I haven't heard back from him. Oh well, good luck.

Well, this is very disappointing news. I have been trying to get the iPaq 3650 to work with VPC 4 today. We use VPC to run 98 so that we can run the latest ArcView software. We wanted to run ArcPad on the iPaq as a tie in with our gps unit. Very bad news. So I guess the only thing we can do is wait for connectix. I was hoping to find a driver for the usb support. I would be interested to hear if anyone has found a work around.

PocketPC -> Serial craddle -> USB-Serial adapter -> Mac (Virtual PC)

This should work...

Thanks, I think I will give that a try. Have you done this? Do you know how to set up the Com ports in VPC Win98SE?

Alright, I am going to give this a try. Since I only plan on using this while using VPC 98SE I am opted to go with the Keyspan High Speed serial adaptor, which is not supported for Mac but is for win 98. I read on another board that I would just need to assign COM port to it. I also decided to go with the Keyspan because they seemed to have detailed documentation of installation and configuration online, plus all the drivers, and a current page of driver updates.

I will report back with my results, positive or negative.

As it turns out there is a downloadable driver from Keyspan for the Mac. This is important, you will need to install the driver for the Mac so you can assign the adaptor to the VPC COM port. I have purchased the iPaq for my office after successfully connecting the our GPS unit to the serial adaptor with a GPS software for a PC. I also connect an older Compaq handheld. The company that was helping me hook this up only had a USB cradle for the iPaq. You need a serial cradle or a null modem connector to use the serial cable. So in short, you can hook an iPaq up, with a serial cradle. You should be aware that that there is a data transfer rate reduction because you are using a serial adaptor as opposed to a USB. We do intend to connect via USB as soon as Connectix provides support for handheld PC. As a side note, we would rather not use any of this and wish ArcView (ESRI) would pick up support for the Mac again, Mac OS X. Then a Mac handheld to sync with it. There is a four week wait for the iPaq 3650 so I will post again with real world results and note any unforeseen issues.

I use a Keyspan adapter (serial to USB) for Pocket PC or Handheld PC devices, and it works okay. Sometimes, if one has already opened VirtualPC and then wants to connect, one has to go back and re-install the Keyspan driver on the Mac side, though. I wish that there was something native Mac better than the Palm, such as the Pocket/Handheld PC units or a new slim color Newton. And the same goes for ArcView, too.

Apple should buy Handspring or Palm. Throw a better screen and a better processor. Apple PalmOS 5.0 with Aqua interface. They will love it. It should be compatible with Win and Linux therefore letting people to be charmed by the beautiful Aqua.

I just saw an interesting site on macNN, http://www.doctorce.com/macsync_prereg.html

It doesn't have too much info on the product, but to be able to sync with my iPaq natively, now that is happiness. I suggest that everyone should register just to show interest in it, sounds like it could be a great product. Right now i just use the CF card to get stuff onto my handheld, haven't tried the serial trick yet, but that does sound interesting.. Thanks for the feedback.

slider,

Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adaptor is supported on both classic Mac OS and Mac OS X - you just need to download the drivers from the Keyspan web site.

I use one to hook up my Nokia GSM phone with internal modem to my iBook for wireless surfing/e-mail.

cheers,
