Ok... i've been through about a dozen installations, countless hotsyncs, and even an OS upgrade and i can't nail this one down. Hotsyncing my Palm V under either X or 9 simply does not work with AvantGo's Mobile Link/Web software. How is something so simple as hotsyncing a PDA turn into something so incredibly impossible?

Specifically i'm connecting my Palm V serial cradle to a G4/450 running 9.2.1 with USB adaptor plugged directly into the machine. Palm Desktop software is v2.6.3 and i've tried all possible speeds in the Serial Port Settings, as i'm aware that sometimes the higher speeds will cause the HS to drop. Everything else (outside of AvantGo) seems to sync just fine. Checking the HotSync log i get an error #4096 for AG and have subsequently followed all the suggestions on AG's website as to how to remedy the situation - no dice.

So my question... second to buying a Wintel box *just* to sync my Palm or ripping AG/Palm a new butthole what are my options here?

Anyone?

I've found on both pc and mac that if Avantgo syncing is interrupted just once (as for example if you try to sync and the dialup to your ISP doesn't work, for any reason), then this interrupts the syncing somehow and you have to go to their website to get it going again... it was a long time ago that I had to do this, because I simply gave up on the idea of Avantgo as idiotic for anyone that doesn't have a permanent (non dialup) Internet connection...

Oh good, it's not just me getting more grey hair by trying to synch AvantGo content. I love having the channels it gets, but I've wasted a number of hours getting mine to work reliably too.

I think I reinstall the cursed thing about once a month.

My best advice- I delete and reinstall the control panel and the app from the Visor when it goes funky. Usually works.
OS X: Where software installation doesn't require wizards with shields.

I normally have to reinstall the Palm Desktop because it seems to be a HotSync problem (PALM NEEDS TO FIX THIS TYPE OF STUFF)

Half the time my Palm V isn't even recognized by the USB Serial port monitor but if I unplug the USB connector from the machine and plug it back in it usually finds it. If all else fails for me, I restart then unplug BEFORE you hotsync. It is painstaking but better than reinstalling one a month.

I've had my visor deluxe syncing with Mac OS9.1 9.2 and it works very reliably - including hundreds of Avango pages daily.

OSX was a problem - everything sync'd fine , avantgo would connect - but no channels would update on the visor......until now ....10.1 to the rescue ....

Classic's days are numbered now.

I hate to say this (knocking on wood), but I have no problems with AvantGo and rarely have problems syncing my Visor Platinum to my iMac running OS 9.2.1 and Palm Desktop 2.6.1. My Hotsync cradle is plugged into a Belkin powered USB hub.

That's not to downplay any troubles anyone else is having, but just to balance out the picture a bit, I guess. I have heard that Handspring uses different USB drivers from those supplied by Palm, which may explain some of the issues people are raising.

The unfortunate trend here is that Palm users seem to be having problems, Visor users working (at least most of the time) just fine.

I am still completely stumped by this issue. The only thing i can think that might have changed things is the upgrade to Mac OS 9.2 and Palm Desktop v2.6.3, but then i tried downgraded to 2.6.1 a while back and still no go.

I think i will try e-harassing AvantGo for some answers...

I think it is more of a power problem (with USB), as far as palms not being able to sync as often. Other than the power consumption of the cradle, there is no differences (software wise)

I have a Visor Pro and I've only had one problem where it didn't have any channels loaded on my Visor after a failed sync. I had to rerun AvantGo Connect Installer and sync again before everything worked. Overall, though, the Visor's been very reliable with my Mac.

My experience is this: Standard conduits hotsynch perfectly in both OS 9.2.1 and 10.1 with classic. Avantgo works fine in 9.2.1 but drops the hotsync connection in 10.1. So, I have to reboot into 9.2.1 to hotsync Avantgo. This is painful to me and I have lately been modem-syncing Avantgo.

My details: I have a Palm IIIx with a USB cable. Standard procedure in both OS's is to NOT load Serial Port Monitor at startup, and NOT connect the USB cable before startup. When I hotsync, I do the following (assuming 10.1 here):

1) Launch classic with USB disconnected
2) Connect USB
3) Launch serial port monitor
4) Hotsync
5) Quit serial port monitor (via AppleScript or HotSync Manager)
6) Disconnect USB cable

I don't know if this will help anyone, but I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one with Avangto "issues".
