Kyocera just released a palm/cell phone hybrid called the QCP-6035 (see http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kysmart/kysmart_series.htm). It's a Qualcomm CDMA phone with a Palm VII built in (8 MB RAM). After buying it from Verizon, I could not get it to sync with my G4. My Palm V syncs fine via the USB-serial adapter, but not the QCP-6035. A call to Kyocera tech support confirmed my fears: they tried it on an iMac with the serial to usb convertor that shipped with the USB Connect kit, but couldn't get it to work, tested no other macs, and don't have a solution. Guess I'll have to put Virtual PC with Windows 2000 on my shoping list, kuz the phone is too cool to send back....

3/12/2001 See my post further down. It does work but needs some babysitting.

I wonder if it would work via Infared synching (IE, to a PowerBook.)
The phone looks cool... if only we could sych it to a Mac.

I wonder if the guys at Mark/Space could come up with a solution. After all, they did it for the Sony Clié: http://www.markspace.com/cliemacpack.html

I'm gonna e-mail them and ask... maybe you all can do the same!

Great. Thanks for checking. I don't have access to an IR port (saving my pennies for a Ti G4 PB). Just got a note from kyocera tech support insisting that it does work, so I'll call them Monday to get a clarification.

Here's the reply from Mark/Space... I really do hope Kyocera has a good Mac solution.

"If it is a serial cradle, there is no good reason that it should not work
with Mac, and also not much we could do about it - Palm Desktop already has
serial support, so if it isn't working, that would indicate some flaw in
the either Palm Desktop or the hotsync support on the device itself - both
outside our realm."

Sync Success! It's not straight forward, but here's what needs to be done. Once the sync is initiated by pushing the button on the cradle, go the Palm menu in the upper right of the menu bar, choose Hot Sync-->Setup. Next, select the "serial port settings" tab. The sync should start.

Well that sounds like a kludgy way to get a sync started. You have to go to the menu every time? On the normal Palm platform, you hit the sync button and away you go. I wonder what Kyocera has done differently to make it behave somewhat poorly on the Mac platform.

In other news, how do you like the phone?

Yup. Everytime I sync, I have to repeat the process.

The phone is great. All configuration of the cell phone part is done within the prefs on the Palm. My favorite feature today is that I can tell the cell phone when to turn on and off, also via the prefs. (On at 0600, off at 2130).

SMS is nice (don't know if that costs airtime, though). Wireless web does cost airtime with Verizon, though. I'm told that nextel does not charge for wireless web (though they don't offer the phone).

A bit of a followup here.
David Pogue wrote a glowing review of the phone for the New York Times. No mention of any strange Mac inconvenience/incompatibility, which is strange considering his strong Mac background. He also says that Verizon doesn't charge extra for it's Internet features:
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/03/15/te...AT.html?0315ci

Secondly, Palm Info Center has a positive review as well:
http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_S...MODE=FLAT#7688

This one is interesting because the reviewer claims to be a Mac user-- and says he had no problems whatsoever synchronizing. No extra trips to a menu needed. You might want to investigate further. In any case, the posts that followup in the article clarify Verizon's rate plan.

Finally, this link will show you want Samsung is planning in the "smartphone" arena: http://www2.pdabuzz.com/Forums/showt...threadid=14427

One thing's for sure, this will be an exciting space in months to come. Let's hope that PalmOS-based PDA's continue to be announced, and that 100% Mac compatibility is retained throughout their evolution.

Great links. I'll try again, but the trip to the menu bar was Kyocera's suggestion...

Does anyone have any idea how to set up the Smartphone 6035 for internet access with a Mac? I used to be able to do it with Sprint and a Qualcomm 2760. But I don't have a modem script for the 6035 and, I am starting to wonder if there is even a script out there.

Does anyone know?

Gabe
