hey guys,
I was just wondering how many of you got a rev.B iMac G5 with TIGER already installed.
I just got back from apple store with my second rev.B iMac cause' the first one had a bad fan, buzzing sound from bottom left side where the left speaker is was a lil too loud for me.
So yea, both rev.B iMac G5's were double taped, meaning they had to open up the iMac to install TIGER on it. Both of them had slight hairline scratchs on the LCD. Really hard to see, i was cleaning off the LCD under my really bright lamp and saw a hairline scratch from an angle, can see it if i'm looking at the LCD straight on.
I'm just trying to figure out how hard it is for the apple store to be careful and not scratch the LCD when they install TIGER. Is it possible to get an iMac that the apple store hasn't opened up to install TIGER? I really don't want to take my iMac back from a 3rd machine, but it's just really annoying that my BRAND NEW iMAC G5 isn't that perfect, and has a scratch on the LCD.
Also, just want to make sure everyone else can here a really soft buzzing from the bottom left near the left speaker. You have to be in a really quiet room. It's not like the rev.A where you could hear it even if you were playing music, it's pretty soft, just want to make sure it's normal. I heard it on the rev.B iMac in the apple store, so i assumed it was normal.

All Rev B iMac G5 have Tiger preinstalled. Are you sure the iMac you got were rev B??? Sounds like the iMac you got were rev A...
Ask for a brand new rev B iMac G5 with the box closed. It will have Tiger preinstalled. It's absolutely not normal that they have to open the box to install it. Something is fishy...
edit: Just to clarify.... You should have Mac OS X Tiger in the box, but it's up to you to install it the first time (the computer doesn't have any OS installed when it's brand new). So, unless you asked them to do the install for you, they should just give you the iMac with no operating system installed if it's brand new. Just follow the instructions on screen to install it. What I meant in my comments above is that you should have Tiger in the box and not Panther.

"they should just give you the iMac with no operating system installed if it's brand new"
umm, every time I've gotten a computer from Apple it has had the OS pre-installed. It would be quite a hassle if they didn't pre-install it.

It might be different depending on the country then... I bought several iBooks in France, and none of them had the OS pre-installed.
Anyway, there is no reason why they would need to open the box and install the OS.

My rev. B iMac G5 will be here supposedly on Thursday (I ordered it roughly a week and some change ago).
I'll let you know if I hear any fan/weird noise, I've never used a G5 iMac extensively so I don't know what's normal
I have this unhealthy dread of having dead pixels when it shows up though .

I'm also expecting mine on thursday and am worried about the same things. I know dead pixels aren't the biggest deal, but i just want it to be perfect! Hopefully the fan will be silent or the noise won't be too bad. My room is generally never quiet (music, TV, etc.) so i don't think it'll be a problem (i'm hoping)
To the original poster, I'd take it back. Having a scratch on my brand-new $1800 computer would bug me every time i looked at it.

well, i can only see the scratch if i'm looking at it from an angle, it's def. very hairline scratch. i don't want to take this one back to exchange for a new one that could possibly have dead pixels. i can live with a scratch that i can only see when the LCD is off more than i could live with a dead pixel.
about the faan noise, i'm sure no matter how good your iMac's midplane is, there's gonna be some kind of fan noise. Just depends on how hard you listen for it.
