Not sure if this is the right forum but I think it really reflects more on
the iMac hardware. The machine tested was a 2.0 ghz CoreDuo iMac.
Had the opportunity to stress-test Garageband at the Apple store the
other night while a friend was buying something else.
They had a 33 key midi keyboard connected to the unit and I figured
I'd see how many software instruments it would allow me to use before
the thing seized up by running as many tracks at max polyphony as
possible.
I hit 26 tracks of all 33 keys pressed using every high processor
consumptive pad/texture synth with choruses, delays and reverbs before
the thing hit 165-175% in CPU time and shuddered to a halt.
My guess is that under "real world" use (not using all software instruments,
not pressing all keys down) you'd probably be able to push it to 50-60 tracks.
A "real" sequencing app would likely do more on this platform but
that ought to be enough for home and pro-sumer users.
