Can you use the monitor on an imac as a secondary monitor for another computer?

Meaning if I bought a 20" imac could I also use that as the screen for a PC?

No... the iMac has no video input.

If you had to have your PC display on your iMac, you'd have to use something like VNC.

That's not going to work so well for gaming.

Oh well.

If you brought a new intel imac you could boot into mac os x and windows and just have 1 machine, not sure if that is what your looking for or not....

No, I need more gaming power. And i'd still be using my PC in some capacity so i'd need a 2nd monitor.

KVM's that support DVI and USB are quite expensive.

Am in the same situation. Personally I'm hoping they introduce a single CPU (dual core) version of the Mac Pro, at a lower price point (much like they have for several of the PowerMac ranges), which would solve the problem for me...

It would be nice for a more expandable machine positioned in the line-up between the iMac and Mac Pro price point, but I'm not holding my breath...

I just bought a 24" LCD from Dell wich i can connect to my powerbook, Mac mini (G4) and a xbox360 simultaneously. I only need to push a button on my 24" and it will switch to a different screen. Very handy.

But now i want to replace my mini with something faster. And right now you can only choose between a very low end mini and a very high end Mac Pro.

Sigh.

Yakkiebah, Others,

I'm looking to use an iMac as second monitor for a Macbook and read somewhere that by (1) connecting the Macbook through Firewire and (2) setting the Macbook as start-up disk, the Macbook would be leading and the iMac display would be the screen extension.

Can anyone confirm this is true? If not, any other suggestions (other than to buy a Mini or Pro and add screen, keyboard and mouse).

Thanks,

Erm, well, no. The way your describing would be using Target Disk Mode to boot from the MacBooks hard drive. This would be pointless really as your MacBook would just be acting as an external HDD, no spanning, no simultaneous use of both the iMac and the MacBook.

Yes , you can. Just try ScreenRecycler from http://www.screenrecycler.com/

You can even use a Windows PC or a Linux box as second display.
