Hello I am quite new here, just be gald to join in. I am now using a dell desktop, I want to get an imac, and have found a deal on the refurbished 20-inch iMac with 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB, 250GB for $999. Are the refurbished ones reliable? It is covered by Apple's one year limited warranty.

I have the same iMac you're looking at, refurbished. Yes, they're just as reliable as new ones. They've been the full inspection by Apple and are fully guaranteed. Yes, they are covered by the one year warranty, and you can purchase AppleCare for them to extend that to three years just like a new iMac.

Have no fear about refurbs from Apple. They'll come looking just fine and are GREAT deals.
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Go for it. I have the 20" 2.4 GHz, bought a couple months ago as a refurb. It's the second refurb I've bought, and I've had only good experiences.

Occasionally you'll get lucky and find a BTO option on your refurb. My iMac was supposed to have a 320 GB hard drive but it actually came with a 500 GB drive. Other times, you might find extra RAM or a better video card.
