My G4 iMac 17inch 1 GHz starts up with correct chime sound and the display flashes for a moment and then goes dark. The iMac IS running and can be accessed by other Macs on the network. The problem is that the screen goes dark immediately. I have just replaced the inverter. The login screen is visible completely for a second and then the screen goes black.

Is there a way to access the control panels from a 2nd computer through the network?

Is there an F-Key that controls display brightness?

Is this due to a dead or weak backup battery inside the G4 iMac?

Anyone have a professional opinion on this? This iMac is running and working fine, except the screen does not stay lit up. It flashes on at the start, instantly goes dark, but it continues to display the video image in the display - only it is dark. When I hold a bright light to the screen, I can see the desktop and everything. Doesn't that mean the video IS working? Would there be images on the display if the video was NOT working? Does this mean the back light is the problem? I just replaced the inverter board with no improvement but the momentary illumination of the desktop at start up.
