[G-mac]

I'm thinking of finally upgrading my trusty old PowerMac G5 with a new iMac - not being able to update to Snow Leopard did the trick. Ideally, I would like to do some amateur video editing (my 7 month old is so cute) and some photo editing.

My G5 tower can handle tasks tolerably (and noisily), but I'm wondering if the new iMacs will run circles around it (hoping so)? My current configuration is a PowerMac Dual 2Ghz G5 with 4GB memory, ATI Radeon Pro 256MB, and 2 1TB 7200rpm HDs. I've got it connected to a 23" Cinema Display and it's running OS X 10.5. I'd only be using the standard iMovie and iPhoto, not FCP.

I think the iMacs are a great deal and I don't think I have the space or need for a new MacPro. Thanks in advance for your input and helping me decide!

All of them will run circles around your dual G5 Power Mac, with CPU-dependent applications. However, the slow GPU in the low end entry model will hold it back.

In your shoes though, if I had the money I'd get the Core i5 quad-core or Core i7 quad-core.
