Man is she stuck in the past. Puts together a newspaper with my father for the air cargo industry, and uses Pagemaker 5 on a Supermac S900 225mhz. It's time for her to move to X.

I figure her 21 inch CRT is still good, though probably dimmer than it used to be.

I would love to get her a Dual 867, but I was wondering if that is overkill. Maybe a used or refurbished, older Powermac iteration. A G4-933, or 867. One of the Quicksilvers that wasn't so noisy and was upgradeable with cheaper memory. She really has no need to burn DVD's. Or play them. A CDRW is all she could really use.

Also, where should I look for said used computers? Where have you guys and gals found the best deals and such? Ebay is a joke. Unless you are selling, I guess.

I don't have much cash to burn, so a tower for $1200 would be cool. I could also make use of a student discount. It's just that damn NY tax that kills ya.

thanks.

I'd go with a refurb 933. If you really want to splurge on something how about a nice LCD?

How much would a refurbished 933 cost? One place had it for more than the dualie 867, cause of the Superdrive.

Anybody have any leads?

thanks,

Hold up a sec... What software are you going to port her to? If she's used to using PageMaker, do you plan on trying to use that with X? I'd be astounded if PageMaker ran on X, let alone printed.

This is often the problem--we want people to have new computers, not necessarily because they need them, but because it's cool to have the latest and greatest, often at the expense of productivity.

Also, about eBay being a joke. That's a bit hasty. I've found many great deals on used Macs there. You have to be a bit patient and definitely check out the feedback of the seller. But I use it all the time. After all, why pay more than you have to?

Good luck!

I bought a DP 800 off eBay a month ago. Works like a charm!

I find prices on ebay to much higher than they should be. I bought a powerbook 550 refurbished from smalldog for $1700, while on ebay they were going for a good $200-$300 more.

In my opinion, most of the time eBay is a joke. Especially for computer purchases. I would rather go through the Anandtech forums.

I was going to switch my Mom to InDesign. Her computer is damn slow with the internet and photoshop. She does need a boost.
