try a liteon CDRW drive, a good place is

dunno what your looking to spend, but they have a 52x24x52x CDRW for $60 with free FedEX (Model: LTR-52246)

it is bootable and will burn with toast, but to be able to burn in iTunes/the Finder you might need a modified plugin...

how about FireWire external drives?
