This is just a note to let you all know that OfficeMax (www.officemax.com) is selling a 120GB 7200RPM Western Digital hard drive for $180 with an $80 mail-in rebate. If you open a new account online, you also get an automatic $30 discount off you purchase over $150, so you can buy the hard drive for $70 net--a pretty good deal.

I was just looking at this product about two hours ago and it wasn't unavailable then...darn! Well they are also selling the same drive in the retail stores for $70 net. They're $160 - $90 in mail-in rebates.

I'm going to try to get one at the store this week. Hopefully they're not all sold out at the stores. By the way, this is an older drive with 2MB cache.

Unless you're doing Video work on the drive, it should not make much of a difference. The only benefit of the 8mb cache drive is that you get a 3-year warranty on it instead of the usual 1=-year warranty.

Still a good find, but I do hate those mail-in rebates.

The 120GB drive with the 8MB cache is also on sale/re-bated this week for $119 at Best Buy.

$199-$20 price drop - $50 mail-in rebate - $10 mail-in rebate.
folding@home is good for you.

OK all. I went to the store yesterday to buy the WD drive. The sale product is the drive with the 2MB cache. These drives have been discontinued, but OfficeMax is substituting the 8MB cache models. I bought one.

Bottom line: 120GB, 7200 RPM, 8MB cache for $70 net. The price is good until May 3rd.

Chris

P.S. It wan't just my local store that substituted the newer drive. They have a piece of paper from corporate headquarters that authorized this subtitution. If they give you any trouble, tell them it's an authorized substitution.

I just called my local Office Max and they said they were out of the sale drive. I asked them if they were substituting the 8mb cache drive for it, and they said they were not.

So I'm the first one on the list if they get any more drives (which they won't, they said...).

Could anyone pick up an extra drive and I could pay through PayPal?

Steve,

I'll stop by my local store tomorrow and ask them why your store wouldn't do the substitution. I saw that they had an official sheet of paper from headquarters listing the better drive as a substitute.

Good news. Office Max called me today and the store manager said that she had 1 of the SE drives left that I could have for the discount price.

I guess the person I talked to didn't know that you could substitute the SE drive for the regular one, and wouldn't believe me when I told her that I could.

Anyways, I picked up the drive today and it's working flawlessly. It's nice having 200Gb of storage... mmmmm, more movies, music, and games...

Steve,

That's good news. I got a copy of OfficeMax's weekly ad planner at my local store. It very clearly states that the 8MB cache may be substituted for the 2MB cache drive. At the bottom there is a note that says "The substitute must be offered in all stores."

I was going to scan and email it to you, but apparently you don't need it any more.
