Smart Catalog CS is a solution for Adobe InDesign CS that links a data source to a document's text or image frames. It allows publishers to quickly set up product and image catalogs. As the data in the document is linked instead of copied, the data remains "live" and can be updated or changed by the click of a button.

Smart Catalog CS introduces the ease-of-use common to every WoodWing product, to data publishing with InDesign CS. A database is published by making a data source available to Smart Catalog CS, and placing links to data in text or image frames. An optional Robot module will allow users to write scripts, enabling them to fully control the database publishing process. It will allow for the creation of complete catalogs from scratch or to fully automate the update process.

Smart Catalog CS supports one-button linking to data records. For glossy brochures and non-tabular catalogs it allows record links to be placed in a document one at a time. It also links complete groups of related records to tables in an InDesign CS document, allowing for a very fast publication turnaround of product listings in tabular format.

Smart Catalog CS will link image files to image frames in an InDesign CS document if a database contains references to images residing on local or networked volumes. Supporting InDesign CS's text styles and various number formats, Smart Catalog CS enables data layout to match that of the rest of the document.

Data is consolidated only at printing time, leaving the links in the document untouched for easy updating and changing later on. This saves time and makes adding new records to a document easy to do. Erik Schut, President of WoodWing Software said: "Until now, if you wanted to publish a database, you would copy the records into the InDesign CS document, thereby losing the ability to update data changed in the source file without having to copy that data again. Smart Catalog CS introduces the power of data-driven publishing to InDesign CS."
