FS

Powerbook about 5 months old.

15" 1.67GHz
1.5GB RAM
80GB
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
Airport Extreme and Bluetooth
Combo Drive
Backlight Keyboard
and an iCurve stand

Probably looking to sell within 2 weeks

Somebody tried offering me $1000 because thats how cheap he said he saw them for on ebay. I was unable to find these deals. I payed around $2k for this, plus tax, and added a gig of RAM, in May of 2005. Also have bluetooth apple keyboard thrown in for free! Make me a reasonable offer.

sorry to offend. im not really sure what a fair asking price, but i think we can agree that $1000 is pretty ridiculous.

asking price: 1750

I think 1750 is probably quite reasonable. I'm not sure what the education price of the new 15 inch is, so 1750 might be a bit high, but it's a heck of a lot closer than 1000 to the right price. You are correct in saying that that offer is ridiculous.

Just FYI

Apple's refurbished store is selling:

Refurbished Powerbook 15-inch 1.5GHz Combo Drive
$1,499 with 1 year applecare warranty.

Refurbished PowerBook 15-inch 1.67GHz SuperDrive
$1,599 with 1 year applecare warranty.

Granted, they do not have the 1gig stick, but you don't have a 1 year warranty.

I actually just saw that deal on apple.com. Price reduced to $1700 and I'm including an iCurve stand and apple bluetooth keyboard (both only 2 months old, and hardly used). I'll also pay the shipping to continental u.s.

I would recommend Ebay.

Seems there are plenty of buyers snatching up the powerbooks over on Ebay.

A lot of people post prices of Apple REFURB stuff to match what people sell here... I don't think those are equals. There's something to be said about a machine that's never had to be fixed or opened up. I would say $1600 would be a good price to sell or buy this machine. You should think about putting it on ebay, but it will cost you quite a bit in ebay comissions, so factor that in. I would recommend your local craigslist.

How do you know his machine has never been fixed or opened up?

And so what if a refurbished unit has -- it also comes with a year's worth of Applecare warranty -- which most units sold here do not.

IMO, Apple's refurb units are worth more than the ones being offered here.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions...

First of all, we assume that the original poster would give full disclosure of the repair history of his powerbook (unless it's something minor, like a keyboard key). This is just common sales etiquette.

Second, just like cars, a lot of people just feel more comfortable purchasing used if they know it hasn't had anything major done on it. FOR INSTANCE, a used car kept in good condition by it's owner, or a used car that was in an accident and had to have quite a few things repaired. OF COURSE you can't fully equate cars and powerbooks.... but it speaks to a persons' level of comfort with a product knowing it's history.

As a Certified Apple hardware technician, I can tell you that I will never again buy refurbished. Not that there aren't any good refurbs out there, cause they are tons. But because the ones I've seen come in for their warranty repairs, came in multiple times.

In the BEST example of a refurb, a PowerBook gets returned for being DOA because of something very minor like defective RAM, defective battery, or something that basically can be replaced/repaired without opening the computer. Because they can't sell these units as new anymore, they sell them as refurbs. Someone get's real lucky.

In the WORST example of a refurb, they have enough parts from several different DOA powerbooks that they can put a refurb together. So they grab a logic board and RAM from one, an LCD from another, use brand new cosmetic casing, etc... and put one together. Sure, this could last forever.... BUT, the danger in these is that SOMETIMES, damaged components can damage good ones, so one of those good components may have been damaged and may not present any problems for a while. OR, if the technician wasn't practicing all their ESD (electrostatic discharge) safety guidelines, they could have fried something going in. Sometimes those don't present issues for a while as well.

So, in conclusion: EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINIONS.... but coming from a technician who's seen quite a bit, MY OPINION IS THAT A WELL KEPT USED POWERBOOK IS MUCH BETTER THAN A REFURB WITH 12 MONTHS OF WARRANTY.

But how is it better?

If I buy an iBook from here for $500, and it has zero warranty left - How am I better off, when I could have bought a comparable model that was refurbished, and has a year's worth of warranty - and is $700?

Sure - I expect a refurbished powerbook or ibook or whatever to BE refurbished. But I also expect it to come with a one year warranty- which is something that most people here can't provide.

These are all just machines - and they all could break at one time or another.

So buy a refurb, no one told you not to. I'm just saying AGPETZ's PowerBook is worth more than a refurb in my opinion.

Are you one of those guys that can't just agree to disagree?
