I accidentally burned a hole in the screen of my iBook G4 during a very stressful call to verizon dsl tech support. It's just the plastic casing that was damaged- the screen and the computer are functioning perfectly. I need to replace the casing but my local Apple store told me they only sell the whole screen for $600. Needless to say, this isn't covered by my warranty.

Does anyone know how I might find or buy a dead screen/computer from which I could scavenge the needed part? I'm pretty sure I could just remove the cover of my screen and replace it with a fresh one, if I can find one.

Thanks

ebay is probably cheapest, unless you find someone parting out parts. from what it sounds like, you don't need the whole LCD or a "dead screen"... you need the back casing of the LCD or the front bezel. pbparts.com probably has it too, but you would pay a 200-300% premium

the story isn't too exciting... my roommate had left out a lighted candle on the kitchen table where I was working. At some point during the 90-minute cross-continental call, the candle burned low enough so that I couldn't see it over the screen, and I absentmindedly scooted the computer too close to the open flame. My roommate noticed the hole in time to limit the damage. It could have happened to anyone, really.

and in case you were wondering, a charred iBook screen back looks a lot like toasted marshmallow. Only it smells a lot worse.
