I've decided to try to sell my last classic machine. It is a
Power Mac 8600 (originally a 200Mhz. 604e), upgraded with a Sonnet 400 Mhz. G3, 320 MB of RAM and a USB card. It has a zip drive, though I wouldn't put much trust in it. Everything else is stock (2 GB hard disk drive drive, CD-ROM, floppy drive, etc.)
I'm including an excellent 17" ViewSonic 17GA stereo speaker CRT with it along with it's Apple Extended ADB keyboard and an ADB trackpad with it.
This is really an excellent machine to run Mac OS 9 or earlier on. I'm actually running 10.3.9 on it, though of course it isn't ideal for this machine. I'm including the latest official Mac OS it can run (Mac OS 9), as well as various earlier version Mac OS discs with it.
Also, I have two CD box fulls of LEGIT software I'll send along with everything including Bryce 2, Poser 3, ClarisWorks 4.0, AppleWorks 6, Adobe Education Edition Photoshop 6.0, LiveMotion, GoLive 5.0 and Illustrator 9.0 , Corel Print House, Real PC, Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Science, A Brief History of Time, Distant Suns, Mars Rover and games like SimTower, Master of Orion II, Star Trek Borg, StarCraft, Majestic, and Lode Runner.
In summary:
- Power Mac 8600 400Mhz G3 w/320 MB of RAM and USB card
- ADB Keyboard and trackpad
- ViewSonic 17" stereo speaker CRT
- Two box-fulls of Classic Mac OS software
Not sure if it's worth selling. I guess I'll find out soon enough.
I'm asking $600 OBO + real shipping cost
I'm asking $400 OBO + real shipping cost

That is a lot for a Mac that a local computer shop has for $20.

Indeed. I've seen far more well equipped 9600s (1.5GBs of RAM and 700/800MHz G4 cards) go for well under $200 on eBay more than once. A system of this calibur usually pulls in $40 at most.

Lateralus is right. You've got a fine machine there Gabriel but something from 1996/7 is not gonna be worth much anymore. You're actually better off keeping it. If you want to get rid of it, you'll have to let it for for 50 shipping. 100 at most!

It's incredible that a $2,700 machine back then with a bunch of software that probably cost more $1,000 is now worth so little, yet I see Apple IIs commonly going for $200 or so. I guess it's really not even worth selling anymore, then.

Computers seem to be like cars in their depreciation. They lose value until they're worth nothing (or less) and then they steadily begin to rise in value as collectors and aficionados begin to eye them. Your 8600 probably has another three or four years before it's worth nothing (or less) and another 10+ before it regains any value.
