Tax Free Weekend

I live in a state that offers a tax free weekend. The problem is that the weekend is the first weekend in August, and the WWDC is the second week in August!
I was thinking about buying a new desktop Intel Pro machine if they are announced at the WWDC. I thought maybe I could go to the Apple store- buy a machine before the new ones are announced or even a gift certificate for a machine, then return the machine a week later for a new one.
Any ideas on how to pull this off?

i think you might be out of luck. no one pays tax on giftcertificates. you pay tax when the gift certificates are redeemed.
the best you can hope for is either being able to exchange the machines if the prices are exactly the same. that way, they might not have to do anything with the cash register.
or if you order a custom model from the apple store and hopefully, it takes a long time for the order to be fulfilled, and then before it is shipped, ask to change it or hope that apple might give you an automatic upgrade.

Apple doesn't permit returning BTO computers, so that probably isn't an option.
Best bet would probably be to buy a machine on the last possible day and leave it upopened. They will still have to process the refund/exchange, but maybe you could get lucky.
Alternatively, you could always buy from Amazon. There's no tax, and if use A9.com for a few days as your search engine you get the Pi/2 discount. I've also heard of people purchasing large denominations of gift cards at a discount, but I don't know how that works.

purchasing gift cards at a discount is possible, but there are multiple hoops to jump through. Basically, you're joining a shopper's club and you get to buy the gift certificates at a discount, but you're probably selling your personal info to the devil/a million telemarketers/mass mailings.
to me, it is not worth it. but then again, the government might lose your personal info for you so you might as well get SOMETHING out of it.
by the way, what state do you live in? if you're in missouri, i might take a short trip to take advantage of it, especially since i would be able to use my edu discount in an apple store.
also, this is thread is off topic, and probably should be moved to the powermac forum so it doesn't clog up the already busy marketplace.

I tried something like this ..... got totally screwed.
I live in New Jersey , and was in Philly, so I figured why not stop by a Delaware Apple Store and grab a new tax free iPod. When I got there all they had was white, and I wanted black. The employee told me to simply exchange it in New Jersey, there wouldnt be any problems. I found out Apple doent not do "exchanges" they do "return and repurchase", so I got hit with tax, and wasted time, gas etc.
