Ok I dont need the pimped out ride just something that she can grow into, maybe with internet access for later, enough umph to run kids games and education software etc. I also have brand new never registered polar white ds lite with 4 games and new hard shell protective case to trade if need be. Thanks

Wow I just checked the prices on ebay, and the ones for even basic clamshell laptops are insane. WTH?

i bought one for my daughter last year, she was 9 then. i gotta warn ya, we maxed it out with 578mb RAM, put in an airport card, the processor was 366mhz and she wasn't completely happy.
she thought it was much slower than "dad's" G5 iMac, she hated the screen resolution of 800x600 and hated the track pad. she kept a mouse connected at all times.
it seemed like the perfect first computer for her, but her youth wouldn't allow her any patience.
you may get a different response, we were running OS X 10.3 --
i would suggest an eMac G4 700mhz or 800mhz, which will give you more speed and a nice mouse for her to handle, as well as a little room to grow...
even a G4 iMac would be better in my opinion...
both of those would be similar in price to the clamshell ibooks, from what i've seen.
just some friendly advice from one dad to another.

I agree that the clamshell iBook isnt a good choice for a 6 year old. Sure, its pretty to look at, but the high price, need for upgrades, small screen and fragility are deal breakers for a 6 year old.
You can get some great eBay deals on older eMacs. They are built like tanks and should do fine for what she needs now. Then when she outgrows it, you can let her pick something snazzier without having lost much $$$.
