My folks (and me at one point) took video using a Sony 8mm video camera in the 80s and 90s. I've been wanting to digitalize these, of course, but although the actual camera (optics, CCD, etc.) works, the recording/playback mechanism for the tapes does not seem to. We have a digital camera now, but it uses miniDV tapes, not Digital8 (which is backwards compatible with Video8/Hi8), so I have no way to play and output the tapes for digitalization.

Here's my old video camera:

So does anybody have one these lying around that's not needed or wanted? I'd pay shipping, of course. If you have one I can borrow, I can send it back, both shipping costs at my expense, of course. Any useful suggestions are also welcomed.

I also have an old iBook battery, or some 32MB CF cards I could trade for it, or a Dreamcast game... Just ask.

I have a proposal. Im in the same boat as you except I dont have the minidv cam. I have a Sony Hi8 camera and want to convert my tapes, about 10 of them, to digital. Buying an analog-to-digital convert is something Ive considered but they are just so dang expensive if you are looking for one with firewire which you need for idvd.

Anyway, I have a Sony TRV318 camera. Would you consider letting me borrow your minidv camera to do my movies after I loaned you my camera?

I actually had a similar thread to what you are suggesting at macrumors. I has a couple of offers for an A-to-V converter but I never got back to anyone about it. I actually offered to pay someone for the usage of the converter. Here is that thread:

Wanted to rent/borrow/trade: Elgato eyetv250 or other analog to digital converter... - Mac Forums

Here is my cam, with my name to show that it is me. I dont have alot of posts here obviously but have been at macrumors for a cpl years. I did buy some ram from a guy here in the marketplace. I have perfect ebay feedback 200+. We could exchange phone # and talk prior to doing this if you are interested. Just let me know.

voodoodaddy, I'm considering your proposal. I suppose we should agree to some specifics before, though. I'm also looking into a local solution, but I haven't found any. I guess the offers over at macrumors didn't work out for you? Also, I wonder how much shipping will be back and forth.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like.
