So, my computer fell off the desk and now the screen is a thread away from being completely seperated from the body. I have an Ibook G4 1.4gHz, 1GB, superdrive, 14inch. I have apple care and when I called the apple line they said it would cost me atleast 430 big ones to have it fixed... What should I do - I can't even close the computer to send it in. If I take it to an Apple store to have it evaluted it will cost me atleast 60 bucks because we do not have a store around here. Should I sell the parts... and buy a macbook?

thanks !!!

This shouldn't be in the marketplace, since you're not selling anything.

Can you post a couple pics so we can see what the damage is like? You may be able to fix it yourself.

Well, it's sort of a "should I sell this" feeler.

If you've got the moola, go macbook - you'll love the increased speed.

Yes, pics would be helpful!

This sounds like broken Hinge assembly. I have repaired a few of them and it is one of my least favorite things to do.

That said, the parts are around $100.00 if you can find them and I could point you in the right direction but it is a hairy repair and I will try anything.

For some idiotic reason Apple uses cheesy pot metal for the hinge and it is just asking to be broken like this.

Good Luck

No, doesn't sound a hinge assembly. Not with a description like: "now the screen is a thread away from being completely seperated from the body."

You'll probably need the hinge assembly, and maybe a display bezel, cables that may have been torn or severed..., etc. Good news is, sound like the LCD might be ok.

People sell the entire LCD assembly for this on ebay all the time. Runs about $200 + and takes about 2 - 4 hours for an amatuer to replace.

Or just sell it.

BTW, I DOUBT AppleCare on the phone quoted $430. Apple only does tiered pricing for portables repair. Tier 1 is around $300, Tier 2 around $500, Tier 3 around $700, and Tier 4 around $900. Tier 3 is ANYTHING that has accidental damage. And Tier 4 pricing is cracked LCD. So you're looking at $700 - $900 through Apple.
