Perhaps this is an inappropriate post, and if so - mods feel free to remove.

I see a lot of people looking for cheap machines all the time. Well, if you can get to Charlottesville VA on Jan.30th, the Univ. of Virginia surplus propertiy department is having their first auction of 2002. There are numerous computers available (go to http://anstuf.admin.virginia.edu/Surplus/ click on "auctions" and you can search/browse the lots available).

Auctions are open to the public, and lots are sold strictly as is (and buyer beware) - but it is very possible to pick up some great deals if you are working with a tight budget. I'm sure many Uni's surplus departments do similar sales, but this seems a vastly unknown source of cheap (albeit older and used) hardware.

Just thought I'd pass on the info, strictly for what it's worth

Most Universities (esp State schools) have this kind of thing. So just call them up and ask how often they have the resale shops.

I know this, as I said. It's just that every week I visit some dozen and a half boards (Apple and Linux), and I constantly see post like:

"Where can I get a cheap box, I want to try ????", or
"I can't afford a new machine, where can I get a cheap used box?"
etc
etc

So I thought I'd post a place where one can do this, as many people seem unaware of the opportunity. If you aren't in VA, check out a Univ. near you.

P.S. Yes, I work for UVa, in the ITC department, so I posted what I know about.
