Hi,

I really want to get a Cube Combo drive (DVD playback, and CDR/CDRW). Anyone have one that has no use for the CD burning? I will trade my DVD Cube drive for it plus a little money.

Or maybe someone knows where to buy this drive? Or seomthing like it that fits in my Cube?

Thanks!

Karl

I don't believe there was a Combo drive for the Cube. It was DVD or CD-RW, your choice. I think the first slot-loading Combo was in the PowerBook last fall.

That's not to say there isn't a drive that will work.

Wrong, there was never a combo drive introduced by Apple for use in the Cube. The iBook features a tray-load optical mechanism while the Cube uses a slot-load optical drive.

The TiBook combo drive seems to be the only option though no one has tried fitment into a Cube.

That guy may have mis-typed. The iBook uses a tray-load optical drive while the Cube uses a slot-load optical drive. The only DVD/CDrw combo drive in a slot load config is in the latest G4 PowerBooks. It's possible that drive could fit the Cube, but Apple is the only supplier and hasn't sold the drive separately.

Apple was offering the combo drive as a "special" $299 upgrade to older G4 PowerBook owners. But it has to be installed by an authorized dealer and the old DVD (or CDrw) drive is returned to Apple. I'm hoping Apple will eventually have a large enough supply to offer this combo drive to Cube and slot load iMac owners Hopefuly by that time it will be faster than 8x burn speed.........joe
