Rossman,
Please pardon my ignorance, but will this drive install in a beige G3?
Will it connect to the internal scsi connector on the motherboard and would I need any additional sw (other than the Apple sw that comes with the computer)?
Anything else required (like cabling)?
Thank you, Paul Amundson

Yes, the 20 GB drive will work well, but your probably need to replace the exsisting drive if you have the early rev of the motherboard.

Does anyone know if this drive will work on a PowerMac 6500? How about a Performa 6360?
Also, will the installation be pretty straight forward, or will it be something of a nightmare?
Thanks for you help,
Lanny

Mark,
How can I tell if I would need to replace my existing drive? I would like a second drive for backup purposes so I don't want to replace the first.
Thanks, Paul

I don't know if you can use it in your beige G3, but it certainly won't connect to the SCSI interface, since this is an ATA drive.

Well, that depends on your specific Macintosh model. All G3 models up to the 2nd B&W revision, I believe, can't handle more than 1 internal IDE hard drive. Unless you remove your CD-ROM, I don't think you'll be able to add a second IDE drive, the interface doesn't support it.

Actually, on an early g3, I did manage to install an additional IDE drive; installed on the same ATA bus as the CD-ROM (there are both an IDE drive cable and a power supply plug nearby). Only problem is, it's not bootable and some utilities (ie HD Toolkit) don't recognize it.

The Blue and White G3s can take up to THREE Hard Drives with out any extra bus cards. There are TWO IDE buses in the B&Ws. The first additional drive you connect to the same bus as the original HD. The second additional drive connects to the bus that thw CD drive is on. Usually when you buy a drive, like Maxtor, it will come with the cable you need. Although you may need to change some juspers, especially when using more than one drive. You need to make sure one drive is the master, and another is the slave. For instructions on this see: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com
Thanks!

Walker,
Yes, this Maxtor can be installed in your 6500. In fact, I have just swapped my old Quantum out with this Maxtor. The only part I find most difficult is opening the front cover so that you have access to the 6500's internal hard drive. Other than that, the rest is very straight forward and easy.
You'll like this drive. I do. It is fast, even on the 6500's slow ATA connection (fast enough to feel like a processor upgrade! But it won't make your games' framerates go up, if you're into games, and it is very, very quiet, when compared with the old Quantum.
For installation instructions and how to get that front panel off, check out The 6400 Zone at http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/TMK12v/home.html
Good luck, and have fun! : )

Walker,
forgot to mention that you must have the Maxtor's jumpers set to Master. No other configuration is allowed by the 6500's ATA controller. Instructions on how to set the jumpers come together with the Maxtor. Anyway, my Maxtor is set to Master at the factory, so chances are, you won't have to change the jumper settings, but do check it, just in case.

I tried to order this drive, but Staples tell me that they're out of stock. In the original message, they say to use the store locator to find a store nearby which would have the drive in stock. However, after trying everything I could think of, I was unable to find a way, on the Staples.com site, to order an item from a specific store. Anybody knows how to do it, or why MacNNDeals did mention the store locator?
Thanks!

FYI, the products listed below (the maxtor hard drives) were listed as temporarily out of stock on the staples website today, 4/1/00. I don't know if this is permanent, or just because it was such a damn good deal, but the 4 drives they recommended as replacements were also out of stock.

the first day i read this post i went to check it out. entered my zip when asked and it said they were in stock. next day went back to order it, said out of stock.
well i just tried something....
i erased some cookies (for this to work you're going to have to erase all of the staples cookies, they come in two varieties; staples.comXXXXXX, www.staples.comXXXXXX)
erase those puppies, then enter the website, type in maxtor for the search and when you eventually get prompted for a zip code enter a different one, i entered 13215(syracuse, NY). then the drives showed up as being in stock.
i then clicked add to cart, entered my username and password, and all my shipping info came up (chicago b.t.w).
shipping said 1 day. i typed in the credit card info, discount code etc....
basically this is a glitch in their website, that if they had any sense they could easily fix. theoretically the delivery time should not be 1 day (if no chicago area locations have it). but there website says yes, indeed one day. so when i don't get the drive in the next 5 or so days i expect i'm going to have to write a nice letter to them to complain.... well just thought i'd let you all know.
also the final total did not include calculated tax, they are going to add that later, which i think is quite, well i can't use the words i'd like to here .
peace,
michael

I just ordered one using 95437 as the zip, and it went through fine. I got some slightly more expensive rubber bands, though....
Thanks a bunch for the tip! For what it's worth, I've discussed installing these on iMacs (I've got a rev B) on the dealchat forum, and got some good information on it: http://dealchat.com/mac/read.html?id...;thread=157597

staples update:
my little zip code scam backfired in my face, just got a nice email from staples.com, telling me that the item is out of stock, didn't bill my credit card, blah blah blah. ah well.
they said that i should check back in 3-5 days. problem with maxtor is that their supply of 7200rpm drives is extremely limited, as i have been trying to get one for about 1 month or so now..... i'll keep trying.
have a nice weekend, y'all.

Ordered one yesterday, and this morning I got an email saying they were out of stock. So I called a few nearby stores (~30mins drive) and found one with stock of the drive.
I brought a hardcopy of my online order (complete with the coupon information) and they matched the price and the coupon discount.
so.. good luck finding a local store with stock!

I called Staples to find out if you can use more than one coupon per purchase, and they told me no. But I'd try it if there's more than one space to list coupons, I think I remember there were three.
It is a DiamondMax Plus 6800 hard drive, you can look at Maxtor's site: http://maxtor.com/newsroom/press/nr032100.html

When I went to the Staples web site I too was told that the drive was not available. I then called my local (Concord NH) store and they had plenty. I printed out my order and took it down there and bought the drive for $119.98.
I had never installed a hard drive before but I mangaed to install it in 20 minutes in my B&W G3.
But, what REALLY surprised me was that I was able to initalize the disk with OS9 Disk Setup and it's now a bootable drive as well.
It couldn't have been easier. Amazing... a 20 Gig drive running at 7200rpm for $119!!
I highly recommend this drive to anyone that can use it. I now have a 13 GIG Main drive and a 20GIG for Video Capture..
Thanks MacDeals... Looks like I'll be checking here daily...

I need to know if anyone out there can tell me how to hook this drive up to an 8500. My father has one and wants to get this drive for it. I bought it and went to install it and found the cable to much narrower than the one connected to the internal drive of the 8500.
Installing into my B&W G3 was a snap, is there a way to do this?
If you know can you email me at john@xtremecamera.com
Thanks!

May be a case of ill-informed-ness, but can these things go in a G4?
I think i answered my own question. The web site says that they are ata-4, which the apple site says is in the G4.
But does anyone know for sure?

if I'm not mistaken, you can't install this drive into an 8500 because it has an internal SCSI bus whereas the drive uses IDE. And yes, you can install this drive in your G4.

grimley,
yes you can install them in a g4.
just place it on top of the already installed ATA drive and hook it up to the power and ide/ata bus.
make sure to set the jumpers right. (you may have to try it a few times to get it right)
then format it with apple drive setup.

It looks like this 20.4 Gb Maxtor drive from Staples is a great deal.
I have a beige 266 mhz G3 (machine ID=510). My profiler says that the internal drive is an ATA device (a 6 Gb Quantum Fireball). It appears that the Maxtor is an EIDE drive. Can I install this into my Mac? If so, will it require me to replace the original ATA drive? Or can both an EIDE and ATA drive co-exist internally in my 266 mhz beige G3?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Only if you have an EIDE controller in your box. 7500/7600/7300's all have dual SCSI (internal/external) buses and not IDE/EIDE. This drive being ATA will only work in Beige G3's and above, most 6000 series Macs, Performa 6xx and above, Motorola Starmax (?), and I think Power Computing.

The 8500 does not have an IDE/EIDE controller to hook up the drive. Without that you are stuck with a boat anchor. There are some IDE/EIDE SCSI converters that I have heard about, but I have not researched them or validated them.
