New to the boards, but wanted to see what you all thought. I'm looking to get more portable (hopefully a TiBook). Was looking to see what I could get for my current system:

Power Macintosh G3 450 B&W Tower
(Originally Apple Package w/128MB Ram & 9GB U2SCSI HD)
• 1GB Ram (4x256MB)
• 9GB U2SCSI Internal HD (from Apple)
• 18GB U2SCSI Internal HD (Quantum Atlas IV)
• 18GB U2SCSI Internal HD (IBM)
• 75GB Ultra ATA-66 IDE Internal HD
• 250MB Zip Internal (Iomega)
• Adaptec 2906 SCSI Card (for external burner)
• Global Village 56K Internal Modem

17” Apple Studio Display
ClubMac 8x24 CD-R External SCSI
(Front plate detached, received this way from ClubMac – held in place by blue clay)
Wacom PenPartner USB Tablet (CT-0405-U)
Gravis Gamepad Pro USB
Entrega machub7U (7-port USB hub)
Umax Astra 1220u USB flatbed scanner
Logitec 3 button USB wheel mouse
Epson Stylus Color 740i Printer (cartages dried up)

Anyone have a guess on how much I could get for the system? Thanx for any information!

Wow -- a four drive system. Doesn't this kill your power supply?

My estimate is closer to $1000 provided that monitor doesn't have any issues.

Everything is in perfect working order (accept for the faceplate on the CDR). It's the computer that I'm working on right now.

4 drives has never been a problem. The PowerMacs have always had an overkill powersupply in my opinion - one more reason to like them so much. I've been running 3 drives since the day I bought it, and the computer is rarely off. The fourth drive was added about 6 months ago, an no problems what-so-ever. Workhorse of a machine - with OS9.1 it's not needed to be restarted for weeks (other than software installations).

$1000 sounds about what I thought. Would love to get more though, I have so much into it, it makes it hard. I want to upgrade to smoething more portable, but most systems out there now wouldn't be a big performance increase (expecially in laptops) - hard to justify.

FWIW, I recently (within the last few months) sold my G3 400 w/ internal CDRW and 12 gigs of storage and 128 megs of RAM, along with the 17" Studio Display for $850. I put it on ebay and someone bought it with By it Now within 3 hours.

Todd,

I'm in the same boat as you. Desperately searching for a justification to either upgrade it to a G4(550 -- out now) or sell it as a lot. I've got a LOT put into this machine, and have loved it throughout it's life. It's got three drives (the stock 9GB, a 20GB/ATA and an 18SCSI) plus external SCSI burner & 250Zip.

I'm going to have to sell it soon though, as I really want to break into Final Cut and would love to take full advantage of Altivec.

You might consider holding onto the machine for a while yet. I know it's only going to lose value, but as you describe it runs very reliably and none of the portable mac options are really going to give you a huge boost relative to what they're likely to cost. So, if you're still in 9.1, there's no point moving into another 9.1 machine (sure the portables run X, but speed is a concern). Better off waiting for a Ghz-ish PowerBook with a stronger video card before you consider making it your only machine. I say this only because I assume you're putting the machine through some professional paces (consumers don't need SCSI).
Apple: bumping prices, not specs.

I've been holding onto my B&W and upgrading along the way. I'm not getting a new machine until we get a decent system bus (133 MHz ?! That's it?!) like the rumors are hinting of at MWNY. Rapid I/O and 400 MHz fsb with fast RAM is about the only thing that will make me jump for a new system. Like you said, I've got my maching just the way I like it and I don't mind spending a few hundred $$ to keep it humming. Of course I'm no computer professional so the cutting edge is not important to me.

I've been fooling around with a new Athlon box (XP 1700 processor, 40 GB HDD, 640 MB pc2100 RAM, Win2000Pro) and it's not as terrible as I had feared. In fact, for $480 shipped to my door, its tough to beat. Is Mac OS X worth that much of a premium?

If you have to ask, then to you it isn't. It sure is for me.

Unlike the reader above, I understand. Now if only there was a way to run FCP3 on a WinTel...
