I think applecare is based around the machine, not the owner or purchaser. anyway you might call apple or check their website.

In the UK at least Applecare travels with the machine not the person that bought it...
I just bought a used cube with Applecare, I called the Apple Customer Support line and they took the serial number and changed it all over to my name...
I guess the same system applies in the US.
Peace,
Marc

according to the 'Terms & Conditions' at Apple's website:

also note that Applecare is not available to its customers in the state of Florida - unless your computer is destined for commercial use.

If I remember correctly, you have to transfer it in the persons name. Last summer Adam Betts and I did a trade and we had a huge mess because it turned out that in order for me to use the applecare, it had to be in my name otherwise when they shipped the machine it would go back to him. You could prob. PM him to ask exactly how it went down though.

Heres the way it works. Person selling machine must write a letter to Apple including their name and address along with Applecare # and include the same of the person you"re selling it to. Apple will send the new owner a letter stating they now have the AppleCare. I read this on the Apple site, and had Applecare transferred to one of my Powerbooks from a previous ownerawhile ago. You won't be able to do this over the phone, it must be done in writing.

I talked to a friend in tech support for apple and he said all you gotta do is give them a call, it can be done over the phone.

Hmm, the guy above said you can't do it over the phone, but I'm certainly willing to try if you say otherwise! Whatever makes my life easier, since I too have to transfer an Applecare plan to the new owner of my former Powerbook.
