Perhaps a dumb question, but what functionality does the phone retain with no SIM card in it? Will it work as an ipod touch using just wifi or will it hang on the opening screen asking for a SIM to be inserted?

@SSharon I found this: Using an original iPhone without a wireless service plan which says that it will only work with my old SIM card. I believe I can send the SIM with the phone since I will be getting a new one with the new iPhone. Then it will work as an iPod/internet device over WiFi just fine, even if I restore it before sending it out.
@The Godfather Best offer so far, stay tuned...I can go a full day on a charge which is what most people get. For a couple weeks, the battery life got worse so I traced back the apps I installed, uninstalled the latest ones, and it seemed like one of the apps was causing an issue so now I'm back to normal life. I always keep WiFi, Bluetooth, and Location Services on too. Some people turn those off to get longer life.

I can verify that an original iPhone without the SIM can (and does) work with WiFi.
You do need a SIM (any SIM) installed to set it up initially with iTunes; after that, you can remove it.
I have a 4GB jailbroken 2G iPhone that I'm trying to replace with a 3G; if I do get a fairly-priced upgrade, I'll be selling the 4GB.

^ Isn't $99 a fair price for the upgrade?

I don't qualify for the $99 8GB 3G yet; I have to wait until October.
AT&T limited us to 1 iPhone when I signed up, and my wife got the 3G. I got a used 4GB 2G.
There are lots of little gotchas with these iPhones... like the activation fees, the mandatory $30/mo PER PERSON data charge, etc.

Thank you and Dave for the posts about operation as an ipod touch.
I may end up getting myself the new 3GS and then using my current iphone as an ipod. It would be nice to have the extra iphone around to use in case I have to send the newer one in for repair.
