So it turns out that people tend to sell their old Xserves without rails. Meanwhile apple no longer sells rail kits. So you can get a good deal on an xserve, but have no way to mount the thing in your rack. Anyone have a spare square hole kit? New or used, it's just rails, any condition is fine as long as they work.

Wow that was fast!!! I posted this at 11:01, and then I started going through google page after page, trying to find someone selling these things at a non-rip off price. And not 35 minutes later, on page 4 or 5 of google results, I find my thread I just started. I wish the pages on my websites made it into google search results this fast!!!

If you can't find any for a decent price, will it fit in a 0U shelf?

Or if you're not tight on space you could use a 1U shelf.

I could ask my data center that question, but I'm pretty sure their answer would be "include rails or keep the server"

I thought you were just telling me to 'put it on a shelf' instead of in a rack. I'm googling around now, but 0U shelfs look to cost about $500. Rails aren't that much.

We usually use this $110 sliding shelf. 0U if your server is narrow enough, 1U otherwise (flip it).

$110 is about the best deal I found for proper rails. So ill probably just get the rails. I'm hoping a pair comes up on ebay so I can get a deal. More than anything else related to a server, theres absolutely no reason to buy nice shiny new full price rails

I think they were originally $99, but I don't think they are available any more, even as a service part.

Service parts should be available for 5 years minimum. Retail staff will not necessarily think of this.

I saw both of those auctions. The first auction doesn't even look legit. The second appears to be rails for a G5 xserve, not an intel.

I think the first one is for an Xserve RAID. You might be right about the other one too. I think the part number you want is 076-1234. Apple stores should be able to get you a price for it, assuming the part number is the same for the 2008 model.

I think that's my part number too, hence the title of this thread

I should clarify the same part will work but Apple has a habit of changing part numbers without good reason. Actually since the 2006 model was on sale until 2008 it should still be possible for any store or AASP to order the kit in.

I'm still searching high and low with no luck. The few sites that claim to have them in stock for a reasonable price, don't have them in stock. You place your order, then you wait indefinitely for them to get the part from their supplier. Very frustrating

Have you actually tried an Apple Store? Service parts are available for 5 years after EOL.

No I have not tried going to an apple store. I've tried apple.com and they no longer list them. I've contact apple and they told me to call applecare. But when I call applecare, I can't get anywhere because they won't help me unless I purchase a $50 single incident thing.

You need to talk to a genius in a store. Give them the part number and they will get you a price.
